Patio Gets Premium Upgrades for Family’s New Swim Spa in Mayfield Ranch, Round Rock, TX

The purchase of a swim spa was the inspiration for these homeowners in the Mayfield Ranch area of Round Rock, TX, to call Archadeck of Austin. They needed an extra-strong concrete pad for their new swim spa. It was the perfect opportunity to extend and upgrade their existing patio. Now they enjoy a much larger patio while they wait for their swim spa to be delivered. When it finally arrives, they will be more than ready for it!

Multi-tiered Patio Extends this Mayfield Ranch Family’s Outdoor Options

Our clients had a covered patio at the back of their home and wanted to extend it. We added what is essentially a second patio, just a few steps down from the first. The result is one big, multi-tiered patio that extends from the house out to the new swim spa location. The original patio is the family’s shaded area, and the new section is open to the stars. They will especially enjoy this open patio after dark.

In preparation for the new patio area and swim spa support pad, we did a lot of digging! The early stage of installing a concrete patio involves digging trenches and laying steel rebar. The rebar stabilizes the concrete floor to give the patio a longer life. On this project, we also used the trenches to bury conduit so the client’s electrician can run power to the swim spa when it arrives. They will install outdoor electrical outlets, too, so the homeowners will have electricity on the patio for their convenience.

The new patio surface features a beautiful flagstone pattern overlay. To create this surface, we used a mixture of quartz and concrete that is 8 times stronger than the concrete surface it is binding to. We etched the flagstone pattern into the surface of the overlayment, completing the grooves and grout work by hand. Then we hand-stained each individual piece and sealed the patio surface.

Turning Patio Steps Into an Art Form

Tying the new patio area into the existing patio, we rebuilt the patio steps more to the clients’ liking. These new steps leading from the covered patio to the open patio are wider and deeper than the original, increased from 12″ deep to 18″ deep. They are also shallower than the original steps, creating a more graceful transition from the upper to the lower tier.

As a finishing touch, we built a bench of chopped stone with a smooth stone cap for seating. Much like a seating wall, a bench like this saves space on the patio because it can seat more people than a row of bulky chairs. It’s perfect for additional seating. The homeowners can also use its surface as a place to set out refreshments.

Now the clients’ remaining task will be to install the swim spa on its new concrete pad at the end of the patio. With dimensions of 16’ long x 7’ wide x 60″ tall, this swim spa will be big and heavy. The concrete pad we have prepared for it will stand up to the test, we are certain.

Archadeck Transforms Round Rock TX Covered Patio with Roof Addition

Round Rock TX Covered Patio with Roof Addition

If you aren’t thrilled—or even satisfied—with your current outdoor living area, let’s change it! The project featured in these photos perfectly illustrates our point. When these clients in Round Rock, TX, called Archadeck of Austin, they had a patio and outdoor kitchen with a pergola overhead. While that sounds good, what they really wanted over their backyard patio was a solid roof. They also wanted to add another component to their existing outdoor kitchen.

It’s our philosophy that homeowners should not have to put up with an outdoor living space that isn’t meeting their needs. Your Archadeck of Austin professional design consultant can take a look at the structures you have now and design changes to improve aesthetics and functionality. Our goal is to take your outdoor living area from good (or just okay) to GREAT! Let’s dig in and determine what it is about your outdoor space that’s not working for you—and how we can change that. You spend lots of time on your backyard patio, deck or porch. Let us help you create your ideal outdoor space for leisure enjoyment!

Round Rock TX Covered Patio Design

It was outdoor renovation time at this Round Rock, TX, home. When we modify a client’s outdoor living structures, we’ll work with the existing components to the extent that we can. For example, in replacing the homeowners’ pergola with the roofed structure you see here, we were able to use the pergola’s cedar posts. Demolishing the entire pergola and posts to start from scratch was an option but wasn’t necessary. We saved time and money for the clients by using the posts they already had in place.

We did encounter a structural issue when designing this conversion from a pergola to a roofed structure, but as you know we love a challenge! With Archadeck of Austin’s extensive expertise as a covered patio and porch builder, these homeowners were in good hands. The problem: the pergola we replaced was shaped at an angle, not square. While that may have been alright for a pergola, a roof is much heavier and structural integrity is essential.

What did we do? We added a fifth post! Because one of the posts was not in position to support the squared-off roof design properly, we added another post in the correct spot. From a structural standpoint it was like filling in the missing piece to the puzzle. Then we bridged the gap between the old and new posts at that corner with two horizontal shelf-like pieces of wood. Now it’s a design element!

We used cedar for the ceiling of the new patio cover to match the posts and beams.

Round Rock TX Outdoor Kitchen Expansion

In addition to building a free-standing roof over this patio and outdoor kitchen, we also added a “leg” to the outdoor kitchen. The new portion creates an L-shape with a section designed specifically to hold the clients’ ceramic grill/smoker. We were able to use stone that matched the existing kitchen perfectly. No one will guess that the two segments of this outdoor kitchen were built at different times. Best of all, the addition completes the outdoor kitchen with a piece that was missing from the original design. It answers the question: What would it take to turn this outdoor kitchen from good to great by meeting the homeowners’ needs completely?
