Good Job Gone Bad – And Then Made Great!
On a recent outdoor kitchen project in Southwest Austin, we found ourselves in an unusual situation and the basis of a cautionary tale to consumers. We gave an opportunity to a new, highly recommended, stone mason we found through Nextdoor.com. Unfortunately, the workmanship fell way short of our standards …well anyone’s standards. There is no need to go into details here. Suffice it to say, we released the mason and completed the job correctly – at considerable expense to us. We made it right – completely!
Archadeck of Austin has worked 20 years developing the outstanding reputation we maintain. In this specific case, we were recommended by partner BBQ Outfitters. Substandard quality would have reflected poorly us and them, and the homeowners would not have received the value that they deserve. We took a problem and turned it into a success. As built initially it was completely functional but a long way from right. Now it’s stunning.
When we met with the homeowners for the project’s design phase, they chose white limestone for the base of the kitchen, matching their home’s exterior. For the countertops, they selected buff Lueders limestone, which is sourced in Texas and always beautiful, especially for countertops. The project entailed a 24ft long outdoor kitchen with Artesian Grill, Kamado Joe smoker, Perlick ice maker and refrigerator, Blaze PRO power burner, sink, doors, drawers, trash chute, and storage access behind the kitchen – that’s a mouthful and needless to say a big investment. We think you will agree the kitchen is now beautiful and an excellent addition to the poolside retreat for the whole family.
Despite a rough patch in the building process, this Southwest Austin project turned out exceptionally well. It’s one we’ll show off when prospective clients want to know what kind of work we do. We do great work and stand behind it.
Taking a Leap of Faith – Cautionary Tale!
Consider this nightmare of a possibility … Suppose instead of finding a referral for Archadeck, they had seen one for these other guys and had hired them instead. Their outdoor kitchen would have been a mess and they would have been left out in the cold.
The clients were fortunate (or just very smart) to have hired a professional and reliable company like Archadeck of Austin. We took full responsibility for making sure the work was done correctly. When there was a problem, it was Archadeck that took the hit instead of the homeowners.
Archadeck of Austin will do that for you. As Dave Ramsey said, “Life is hard. Get a hard hat.” We wear the hard hat, and we deal with the hard stuff, so you don’t have to.
The moral of this story is that regardless of where you get a referral for work to be done at your home, you must still do your research. Look that company up online, check their reputation and their references. Having a referral doesn’t always mean you have a company that will take care of you. Choosing Archadeck does. If you’re interested in adding a custom outdoor living space to your home and want to work with a company that takes care of its customers, give us a call. If you want to add a patio, deck, outdoor fireplace or any other outdoor living structure, call 512-259-8282 or email us.
How Archadeck of Austin built a custom outdoor fireplace and outdoor kitchen borne of a neighborly debacle…
Imagine you purchase your dream home in a beautiful community, and in the beginning, you aren’t so much concerned with encumbering yourselves with outdoor upgrades. Then, imagine your next-door neighbors decide to build an upgrade of their own – a bit closer to your back patio than you are comfortable with. This is where Archadeck of Austin becomes the lemonade makers in the proverbial, “when life hands you lemons,” plight. And make lemonade, we did!
Custom outdoor fireplace designs by Archadeck of Austin
We got to work with these Driftwood, Texas homeowners, who soon began to realize that what they at first saw as a neighborly misfortune was turning out to be a very happy accident! Together, we decided to build a gorgeous free-standing limestone fireplace, to match their existing home and patio. The outdoor fireplace is positioned to create a buffer between the neighbors’ outdoor entertaining spaces, but it is so much more! The robust wood burning fireplace will do its intended job, but it will also provide hours upon hours of outdoor enjoyment for these homeowners and their guests. There is hardly anything better than being able to utilize an outdoor space out-of-season, and this outdoor fireplace will accomplish that for these now very fortunate homeowners. Sipping wine or coffee or having dinner while sitting in front of dancing flames in crisp weather will no doubt become one of the homeowners’ favorite outdoor pastimes.

What better complement to the outdoor fireplace than a very roomy, uber-functional custom outdoor kitchen? These homeowners decided to go “whole-hog” and upgrade to a complete outdoor entertaining space for cooking, eating, and relaxing. This beautiful outdoor kitchen has all the amenities of indoor prep spaces! The limestone kitchen design features a large built-in grill, sink, storage, refrigerator, and tons of food prep and serving space. These homeowners will be able to host friends and family for dinner parties and cook-outs and enjoy relaxing private patio dinners of their own. Special occasions are made even better when you have such a unique and accommodating outdoor space to host them in.
As you can see Archadeck of Austin was able to bring resolution to a unique outdoor living situation, where privacy was a must. When called upon to answer a very specific need, we will always earnestly improvise a custom-tailored solution that won’t just answer the call but go well beyond it. - You’ve purchased a brand new house — new construction — that came with a builder-grade patio.
- You’ve purchased an older home where the prior homeowner kept the original builder-grade patio.
- You’ve been living in your home for a while now, and you have it set up pretty much like you want it, except for the builder-grade patio.
You’re probably picking up on our theme here. If one of the above signs describes your situation, then you have a lot in common with our recent clients, who needed a reputable Round Rock patio builder. Wisely, they called Archadeck of Austin for a free design consultation. We have built many, many patios over the years, and each new client benefits from those years of experience.
Today’s featured outdoor living project is a patio extension, but it’s really more than just an increase in the patio’s size. When you increase the size of a patio (or a deck, for that matter) you increase its function exponentially. Suddenly you have a more livable outdoor living space that you can actually do something with. Decorate! Entertain! Cook out, eat out and just sit around relaxing with family and friends.
These homeowners wanted to increase their patio’s livability even more. Their dream project included a fire pit and an outdoor kitchen. At one point they were considering a deck addition instead of a bigger patio. As they explored options with their Archadeck designer, however, it became clear that extending the patio would be less expensive than adding a deck. And a patio would be the ideal setting for a fire pit and outdoor kitchen. That settled it.
When Archadeck of Austin builds patios, we dig trenches. Seeing the finished project, you wouldn’t know we’ve done that, but we add these trenches to give homeowners some extra peace of mind. We use a beam system under all of our concrete patios. First, we dig trenches about 12″ deep along the perimeter and some within the interior of the patio area. The perimeter and internal beams are reinforced with steel rebar to stabilize the patio. Having this reinforced beam system within the base of the concrete structure prevents the patio from moving and settling over time. While it’s still possible that the concrete will crack, as it often does, having that extra stability means ground movement will not cause structural damage to the patio.
We also dug a trench to run conduit for gas lines that would be needed for the fire pit and the outdoor kitchen. The trench specifically for this purpose must be 18″ deep.
Once the trenches are dug and steel are in place, then we can pour concrete. For this patio, we used an overlayment process to create the beautifully textured surface you see here. We also added two sets of stairs, one by the kitchen leading to the side yard and the pictured stairs running to the rear yard. We also added two gates to the top of each , as they have grandchildren and pets to contain.
Now we come to this project’s special added features, which are very popular in Round Rock: the fire pit and the outdoor kitchen. These structures are made of white limestone. The outdoor kitchen includes a gas grill and a pedestal for the homeowners’ Big Green Egg style smoker. The 4′ fire pit has a regulator and starter. Notice how the back wall of the fire pit is built up so we didn’t need to run any railing across the backside of the fire pit. While practical, the stone wall also adds character to the project.
The finishing touch for this patio is a black metal railing system, by Fortress, that borders the patio’s edge. The railing helps define the area visually while also providing safety.
As you can see from the before and after pictures, these homeowners gained more than just a bigger space when they extended their builder-grade patio. They gained a multi-functional outdoor living area, with an emphasis on living. These clients are so pleased with the finished project that they have already referred Archadeck of Austin to two neighbors looking for a Round Rock patio builder specializing in outdoor kitchens and custom outdoor fire features. We love referrals!

Have you ever perused through your favorite home & garden magazine and come across that one outstanding outdoor living space that exemplifies everything you dream about? For these East Austin homeowners, that dream is now a reality thanks to Archadeck of Austin.
This property is located just one mile from the heart of downtown Austin. An area that is alive with renewal, energy and urban vibes. When we initially met with the homeowners they were only looking to design a sunken area to house their hot tub. After exploring this option, and the criteria and costs involved, the conversation broadened as the homeowners expressed their desire to unify the rear area of their home with the detached garage apartment that is just a stones throw from their back door. They were also keen on the idea of having a space that could function as an extension of the home. A place where they could open the doors and the outdoor living area would just naturally flow with no barriers. This is when the design ideas began to come to fruition…
We began perfecting their vision by transforming the area that was previously just a concrete patio. We expanded this area and installed an Ipe hardwood deck to join the backyard of the home with the detached garage/structure as one cohesive space. We then designed and built a versatile outdoor kitchen, gas-burning outdoor fire pit and one-of-a-kind custom vine wall. Each element in the design adds functionality and contemporary styling to the overall project. The vine wall in particular is ingenious as we used 2 x 2 metal tubing and cattle panels welded together, customized and powder coated as the final touch to deter rust.
The customers are over-the-moon about their new outdoor living environment and are looking forward to many years of enjoyment.

Unlike many of the poolside structures and cabanas that we design and build here at Archadeck of Austin, this recent project in the Crystal Falls neighborhood in Leander, TX, is the focal point of this backyard. Most of the designs we build that incorporate a pool environment require a side or angular placement.
For this structure, the placement was best suited directly behind the home, and pool. Since the property is so spacious and the area behind the pool is destined to remain natural green space, making the cabana the focal point of this backyard was a no-brainer.
With a unique New England style roof pitch, this cabana is loaded with comfort and convenient amenities. Natural stone and cedar are fluent within the space as they work together to create a rustic retreat for guests to indulge in a poolside snack, or wind down in front of the large outdoor fireplace featuring an integrated flat screen TV.
The back wall and outdoor fireplace is built with Autumn blend Sandstone which was matched to the identical stone used on the primary home located directly across from the cabana. The outdoor kitchen is also built using the same Sandstone and features a Leuder’s stone cap which was also used on the hearth and mantle of the indulgent fireplace. For visual interest, we added openings to the back of the structure pictured framed in both stone selections. The ceiling of the cabana is finished with tongue & groove natural cedar, as are the trusses and posts seen throughout the space.
It’s clearly natural to see why the homeowner’s adore their new space. Since finishing the project, it has become a favorite destination for family and friends — even including a decorated holiday tree to add festive charm while using the space during the upcoming holidays. Nothing gives Archadeck of Austin more pride than to see how the addition of one of our custom outdoor spaces sparks excitement and anticipation of years of enjoyment…

Archadeck of Austin works with architectural challenges to deliver a stunning L-shaped covered patio
These Cedar Park, TX homeowners contacted us to construct a covered patio for their two-story home. The house is flat on the backside with lots of windows and their landscape architect had already completed some significant rounded rear patios that we were to incorporate into the design. The project was not without its challenges, but we were able to come up with the perfect complement to the existing home and structures.
We initially experienced some issues with the covered patio because the home’s upper windows and large nearby tree were constricting to the allowable height of the area where the covered patio was to be placed. The homeowners wanted a closed wall where a TV could be mounted as well as a full option outdoor kitchen and a dining room area. We were at odds with the interaction of the room facilitated with the height limitations, the existing bay window over the kitchen and the roof pitch.
We came up with a design that includes a lower and shallower roof pitch to compensate for the 2nd story windows and make the design cohesive. We also extended the area further on the right than the left, so the patio would still fit the guidelines of the rounded patio floors already constructed. We added structural supports in prime locations and used larger than normal beams to accommodate the extended span. To make the two roofs we built work together we used a cathedral ceiling on one side and a flat ceiling on the other.
The finished project includes a gorgeous stone bar which was designed to coordinate with the circular lines and add enough space so you can view the TV from any angle. The prime location of the bar area allows flow from the outdoor kitchen, and dining areas as well as access to the TV. In many cases it is difficult to decide where the bar stools should be placed in projects like this because you want a significant enough area to take in all the function and beauty of the entire structure and also allow for proper furniture placement and “pull-out” room as well. We used similar materials to finish the patio that were conducive to the integrity of the existing home. We used complimentary stone on the front of the kitchen and integrated unique stone and tile inserts into the counter tops. The outdoor kitchen includes a propane grill and side burner, refrigerator, storage and plenty of electrical outlets. The finished project created an outdoor oasis that adds value to the home and the homeowners lifestyle.
If you are thinking about creating an outdoor oasis in your backyard, contact Archadeck of Austin to make it happen. This is the season to enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer, family, friends, fun and your own little slice of paradise right outside your back door.

A backyard can hold the key to the ultimate outdoor living enjoyment. A backyard begs to be improved upon, much like an artist’s canvas serves as a backdrop for creativity and visualization. These Austin homeowners took their backyard to a new level by adding a cabana-style covered patio with endless amenities.
When we originally met with these Austin, TX homeowners they had recently installed a new pool and had the area adjacent to the pool poured to accommodate a 15 x 15 pavilion. The homeowners had meticulously collected pictures of what they had in mind, but most of the photos were out of scale. We spoke with them about what aspects of the pavilion where the most important and transferred those into the custom design we prepared for them. They already had a nice grill but also wanted an outdoor fireplace, outdoor bar sitting area, outdoor kitchen with refrigerator, ice maker and sink. They also wanted a place to hang a big screen TV to enjoy within the cabana as well. The dilemma was to fit all the elements they wanted into the 15 x 15 design, which couldn’t fit within the space allotted. We strongly urged them to allow pushing the design out two more feet on two of the sides, which would incur the design components to cover all the newly extended concrete.
The clients had a stunning brick home that also had an existing wood deck, their pool had a decorative stone back and canterra beams. We designed the structure support with that part of the pool in mind and used cedar to pull the whole thing together. The home, the existing outdoor designs, and the new covered patio blended effortlessly as if they had all been built together. Since the home is located in a weather zone and receives a lot of hail, the roof was also upgraded with steel shingles and a crushed stone application so it looks like clay shingles and is durable and strong.
The interior of the cabana boasts custom cypress cabinets which are stair stepped 12″ and 18″. Ingenious design was used to accommodate the TV which required consideration of the placement of the TV as well as the DVD player and cable box, and all the accoutrements that surround the TV. Our cabinet builder customized the TV cabinet and made it deeper to hold all the electronics. We also installed recessed cans for additional lighting in the evening within the covered patio. The existing canterra column lights also aided in night-time illumination. For the bar/serving area we constructed a 6′ bar that can be accessed from either side. This area provides an easily integrated area into the design without becoming a full-blown area to take up too much space. We even installed stucco walls to aid in creating privacy from the neighbors that also hides the children’s playground. Each facet of this cabana’s design allows for flow and easy accessibility.
The homeowners are ecstatic with the covered patio design. It has added in their outdoor, and living enjoyment as a whole. Now the family is directed outside to enjoy the area throughout the week instead of just on the weekends. It is the perfect place to have dinner, family movie night, and sleepovers for the kids. They like to spend their time in the covered patio in the evening as a family watching movies or just enjoying each others company by the outdoor fireplace.
This covered patio is the epitome of an outdoor oasis. This structure is the perfect place for this family to make memories that will last a lifetime, and have a lot of fun in the process! A true work of art in the realm of outdoor living structures.
