Revitalized Back Porch in Hutto, TX, Proves Small Upgrades Can Make a Huge Difference
Today’s feature project in Hutto, TX, is a sweet reminder that smaller outdoor renovation projects can be just as satisfying as larger ones. It’s a matter of perspective. Not all of our projects here at Archadeck of Austin are beefy and massive! While we have built our share of pavilions, outdoor kitchens and beefy pergolas, we love the way a small project can have a big impact.
New Stairs, New Railings Give the Porch New Life
This client has a small, open porch at her back door. She enjoys spending time there and wanted to freshen it up. The first order of business was replacing the old wooden steps leading down to the yard. We built the new steps with AZEK low-maintenance decking boards. These back steps will look great for years without the need for painting, staining or sealing.
New stairs need new railings, right? Whether you call it an update or an upgrade, we custom-designed a powder-coated iron rail system and had it made just for this project. The homeowner’s visibility into the yard increased exponentially. What comes to mind when you compare these thin, horizontal cables to the old wooden pickets? All we can say is out with the old, in with the new! We capped off the new railings with an AZEK drink rail. Not only does it look sleek, it’s also a very useful feature.
New Ceiling, New Lighting Complete the Updated Setting
The porch originally had a painted Hardie ceiling and old-style mounted ceiling lights. We replaced the old ceiling with beautiful, tongue-and-groove Synergy Wood. We updated the lighting with a dimmable LED recessed ceiling light and installed the dimmer control switch inside, near the back door. Finally, we added cedar trim around the edge of the ceiling and stained it to match the Synergy Wood.

Our work here is done! The homeowner is happy with the updates to her back porch. As you can see, updating an outdoor living space doesn’t necessarily have to be a big project in order to make a major difference. Sometimes small upgrades can make a huge impact.

Covered Porch Addition in Pflugerville, TX, Shows Archadeck of Austin Does Whatever it Takes to Make Your Outdoor Living Dreams Come True
Looks can be deceiving, we all know that, and the saying certainly applies to this sweet covered porch addition we built for our clients in Pflugerville, Texas. The results are delightful and offer the homeowners a relaxing place to sit, lounge and dine outdoors. Their new porch gives them a space that’s protected from sun and rain and is illuminated for nighttime enjoyment. To say we made it look easy would be an understatement.
In a nutshell, this covered porch addition had a very complicated roof tie-in. To the uninitiated, it may not look like a big deal. Builders and remodelers, however, will immediately notice this was a complex job. The offset of the rooflines was the primary issue. We needed to tie together the new roof (the porch cover) with three connection points on the original roof to facilitate the addition of a roofed outdoor structure. Porch builder Archadeck of Austin was up to the task. We love a challenge!
Out With The Old …
- We demolished the home’s small, concrete patio.
- We removed the overhang above the back door.
- We removed the soffit to allow for the installation of the roof rafters.
- We removed the existing single back door and window into the dining area.
- We removed a portion of the siding around the back door.
We poured a new, larger concrete patio.
- In place of the original overhang, we used 8 x 8 support posts and heavy beams that we could tie into the existing wall.
- We built ridge walls up so they would extend into the ceiling.
- For the roof tie-in, we built up the wall to carry the load of the beam that would tie into the roof.
- We installed the new roof in a way that gave us enough room for a high ceiling area over the porch.
- We built a new overhang and used the same type of shingles that are on the existing roof.
- We installed a new header over the back door and a new Therma-Tru double door system featuring energy-efficient Low-E glass.
- Once the new door was in, we replaced the siding with Hardieplank siding to seal the wall.
- We installed Hardieboard siding on the interior of the covered porch.
- We used Hardie wrap for the new beams, support posts, soffit and fascia.
- We installed a beautiful beadboard ceiling and painted it blue!
- We painted the support posts white to match the house and painted everything else to make it all look brand new.
- We installed electrical wiring in the new porch roof for a ceiling fan and outdoor lighting.
- We scored the new concrete patio in a 24″ tile pattern with a walnut-colored border and outside edge for contrast.
- We installed a ceiling fan and four can lights in the porch’s beadboard ceiling.
- We installed sconce light fixtures on the outside of the two support posts.
About That Beautiful, New Double Door System …
The new double door makes better use of the space than the original back door and dining room window did. Haven’t we all had situations where we needed to bring something larger than a single door into or out of the house? The new door also updates the look of the back of the house. In that regard, the design impact of this door replacement is huge!
The Therma-Tru double door system features Low-E glass and a low-rise threshold. The door’s energy-efficient Low-E glass helps reduce the loss of heat in cold weather by reflecting heat back into the home. In warm weather, the sun’s rays reflect off of the Low-E glass, helping to keep the home cool inside.
About that Blue Porch Ceiling …
Blue porch ceilings have an interesting history. The practice of painting a porch ceiling blue seems to have begun in the South, but these days you can find them in all regions of the country. Folklore mixes with facts when it comes to explanations for this phenomenon.
- In the Low Country of South Carolina, “haint blue” porch ceilings mimicking the color of water were used to keep out “haints” – meaning ghosts, apparitions or lost souls – because these spirits were unable to cross water.
- In Oregon, porch ceilings painted a shade called Aurora blue were associated with the Aurora Colony, a Christian communal society founded by emigrants, primarily German and Swiss, in the 1850s.
- In New England, the color of a blue sky was used on Victorian porch ceilings to reflect colors found in nature. On gray days, a blue ceiling reminded residents that they would see brighter days ahead.
- Finally, in some areas homeowners believed a blue porch ceiling would trick birds and insects into believing they had reached the sky, thereby discouraging them from building nests in the ceiling. In reality, these early blue paints were often made with milk and lye, and lye does repel insects. The milk paint faded and needed to be repainted each year, or every few years. A new coat of lye probably did keep insects away.
This is what we know: blue is considered a calming color and is associated with peace and relaxation. What better color to frame your new covered porch where you plan to spend countless hours relaxing and basking in nature’s glory?

What a difference an Archadeck of Austin porch cover can make!
Ah, the sun, glorious sun! When we feel chilly, sunlight warms the skin and thaws the chilly spots. But when we’re already warm … that big Texas sunshine can be downright uncomfortable. Escape is all we can think of. A sun umbrella? Not big enough. A porch roof? Aha! That’s the ticket. A new porch cover built by Archadeck of Austin? The best!
Archadeck of Austin was able to help these North Austin homeowners reclaim their backyard patio. The family enjoyed using their backyard pool, but the adjoining patio, uncovered, seemed to be a magnet for blistering sunshine that made sitting outside unbearable. They wanted to turn their unusable patio into an area where they could relax outdoors without being driven inside by the hot sun. A new porch roof would provide the comfort they craved.
The homeowners first met with Archadeck of Austin a year ago. In terms of ideas, they were ready to proceed with a covered patio/porch project, but their budget was not. They estimated they would be ready in early 2017. Fortunately, they were able to start a little sooner; they called us back in December 2016, ready to roll.
Our first task was to repair a large crack in the existing concrete patio. We cut out that portion of the concrete and filled it back in, and at the same time we added two more feet to the patio’s depth. The patio is now 24′ x 14′ — more space for outdoor living! While we were working with the concrete, we added a conduit so the homeowner could hook up his gas line with a flex line to grill out beyond the patio. That’s a convenience he will appreciate for years to come. Of course, the concrete cut-out/replacement and the additional square footage blend in seamlessly with the original patio surface.
After repairing and enlarging the patio, we were ready to build the all-important porch roof. The addition of a roof is what changes this area from a simple patio into a porch — and into a new-and-improved outdoor living space. We were able to match the style and color of the home’s existing shingles so it all blends nicely.
Under the roof is a vaulted ceiling made of beautiful Synergy Wood, hand-stained and prefinished wood with warm, rich tones. At the back of the porch, a ridge wall and flat ceiling/soffit, also built with Synergy Wood, provide a handsome transition from the painted porch wall to the vaulted wood ceiling. We added a full electrical package with a ceiling fan and built-in recessed lighting, and the homeowner mounted a flat-screen TV along the back wall. In the soffit area, we made sure to place the recessed lighting behind the TV so the images on the screen are not diluted when lights are on and the television is in use.
While the back of the porch roof is tied into the home, the front rests on Hardie-wrapped beams and columns, which we painted to match the home. We added stone coping at the bottom of the columns to match what had been used around the hot tub and pool.
At the very end of the project, Sundek (the company that originally surfaced the home’s concrete pool surround) applied a cool-coat finish to the concrete. This finish provides a comfortable walking surface for bare feet by reducing heat build-up. It’s cooler than regular concrete, brick or tile, and it’s slip resistant, too!
The homeowners added comfy porch furniture and, voila! They have a comfortable, inviting covered porch enhanced by a ceiling fan, lights and TV. Gone is the blistering heat of the uncovered patio, a place no one wanted to be! They love, love, love their new outdoor living space and look forward to spending many relaxing hours there.

Breathtaking Ipe Deck and Porch on Rob Roy at the Lake in West Austin, TX
Rob Roy on the Lake is located north of Bee Cave Road in beautiful West Austin. The neighborhood is known for its stunning homes and spacious picturesque landscapes making it ideal for someone who likes to spend time outdoors. Archadeck of Austin has built many outdoor living structures within this neighborhood, our most recent is this beautiful deck and porch combination:
The homeowners had an existing cedar deck but were looking to not only expand their view into the valley below, but also wanted a space that offered shade to escape their super sunny location. Archadeck of Austin came up with a deck and porch combination design that entailed expanding across the roofline on the back of the home with a hip design roof tie-in to accommodate their project. Take a look at this before & after image:
The project features warm, inviting natural Ipe hardwood decking on the floor of both the deck and covered porch. Ipe is a favorite among Central Texas homeowners as a material for outdoor living. The material is valued for its density, strength, longevity and beauty. Ipe is dense enough that it sinks in water. Its density requires that it be pre-drilled in order to be fastened. When fastening an Ipe deck we use stainless steel screws called head coat screws, which are brown to blend seamlessly with the decking itself. The ends of the Ipe boards need to be treated when they are cut during installation to avoid cracking. If you are dealing with a contractor that is not familiar with working with Ipe then you usually end up with split ends, yes in much the same manner your hair can get split ends, from not treating the ends of the boards. Ipe density is also such that it doesn’t absorb much water resulting in a lack of the normal expansion and contraction evident with other wooden decks.
As you move beyond the flooring used on this combination project, there are many stunning details throughout the space. We used black Fortress vertical cable rail that allows clear views into the valley below. Additionally, the beauty continues as you enter the interior of the covered porch area. The ceiling was built using a Synergy tongue & groove prefinished wood in Auburn Pine. The large king beam that runs the expanse of the porch cover is a focal point but it also serves a valuable purpose of helping to support the weight of the roof cover.
As is the case with all our outdoor living structure projects, none of the creature comforts were overlooked when completing the space. We installed recessed lighting in the ceiling of the porch cover and mounted the elegant sconce lighting the homeowners had purchased for the project. We also installed a pair of Minka 72″ ceiling fans the homeowner’s had chosen, adding an extra layer of cool comfort and air flow to their enjoyment.
Needless to say, the clients are elated with their new outdoor living space. It embodies all the qualities they love about the area, and now they can enjoy it to its full potential! The ultimate outdoor living destination could be no further than your backyard!
When you imagine the ultimate outdoor living destination what comes to mind?
Is it a tropical beach that seems miles away from reality? Or maybe a lavish all-inclusive spa resort designed to pamper you in luxury? These are all viable candidates for an ultimate outdoor living destination, but did you ever think that maybe you could have all that and more right outside your back door?
With an outdoor living combination space from Archadeck of Austin, you can!
One of our recent projects in Austin, TX, encompasses almost every element of beauty, relaxation and convenience possible through an outdoor living environment. The design includes a spacious low maintenance elevated deck, covered porch and versatile poolside pergola. These Austin homeowners sure don’t have to travel far to enjoy all the benefits either!
This particular project began with the removal of an existing cedar deck and hot tub area that provided little to no privacy and shade for the homeowners. Their desire was to have a space that spoke to their desire for more space, more shade and more opportunity for enjoyment. The multi-faceted space we designed has not just met, but exceeded their expectations in this regard. Here’s a detailed look at each layer of this project:
The elevated deck and covered porch was built using AZEK low maintenance decking in Cypress and includes integrated low voltage deck lighting. By choosing to go with a composite deck, the homeowners can enjoy very little maintenance as AZEK only requires soap and water cleanup on occasion and a quick rinse from the garden hose. This decking is engineered to last beautifully and unlike wood, AZEK decking resists scratches, stains, insects, moisture, mold, and mildew, and protection from cupping, cracking, and more with a 30-year limited fade and stain and lifetime limited warranties.
The covered porch also features an open end gable with all the porch beams wrapped in cedar. The interior of the covered porch features a stunning Synergy prefinished wood ceiling with recessed can lighting so the space can be enjoyed day or night. The homeowners supplied the amazing and super-efficient Haiku ceiling fan which came from BigAssFans.com.
As we move beyond the deck and porch combination space, Archadeck of Austin also designed and built the freestanding poolside cabana/pergola. Also finished with rustic cedar to mimic the look and feel of the other components of the project. having the benefit of a roofed structure poolside serves as a respite from the sun and a ceiling fan encourages air circulation increasing the cooling power of this spot.

This Poolside Cabana in Leander, TX, Demands Attention!
Unlike many of the poolside structures and cabanas that we design and build here at Archadeck of Austin, this recent project in the Crystal Falls neighborhood in Leander, TX, is the focal point of this backyard. Most of the designs we build that incorporate a pool environment require a side or angular placement.
For this structure, the placement was best suited directly behind the home, and pool. Since the property is so spacious and the area behind the pool is destined to remain natural green space, making the cabana the focal point of this backyard was a no-brainer.
With a unique New England style roof pitch, this cabana is loaded with comfort and convenient amenities. Natural stone and cedar are fluent within the space as they work together to create a rustic retreat for guests to indulge in a poolside snack, or wind down in front of the large outdoor fireplace featuring an integrated flat screen TV.
The back wall and outdoor fireplace is built with Autumn blend Sandstone which was matched to the identical stone used on the primary home located directly across from the cabana. The outdoor kitchen is also built using the same Sandstone and features a Leuder’s stone cap which was also used on the hearth and mantle of the indulgent fireplace. For visual interest, we added openings to the back of the structure pictured framed in both stone selections. The ceiling of the cabana is finished with tongue & groove natural cedar, as are the trusses and posts seen throughout the space.
It’s clearly natural to see why the homeowner’s adore their new space. Since finishing the project, it has become a favorite destination for family and friends — even including a decorated holiday tree to add festive charm while using the space during the upcoming holidays. Nothing gives Archadeck of Austin more pride than to see how the addition of one of our custom outdoor spaces sparks excitement and anticipation of years of enjoyment…

Our Recent Porch Cover in Riverplace is the Perfect Recipe for the Backyard Gourmet
Outdoor kitchens are among one of the most popular of all the amenities in outdoor living design. They provide an area to prepare food outdoors and save an abundant amount of time that would normally be spent running back and forth to the kitchen within the home. Based on the accoutrements they contain, these outdoor marvels can aid you in storing, preparing and even keeping food warm and beverages cold.
In the case of our most recent completed project located in Austin’s Riverplace community which sits on the back of the Riverplace gold course overlooking the greens, the homeowner’s had a lovely existing kitchen atop a stunning patio, the only facet this space lacked was protection from the elements and shade. That’s where Archadeck of Austin enters the picture. These homeowner’s contact us to design and build a porch cover specifically for their existing outdoor kitchen.
The covered porch we designed and built is an asset to the landscape and provides the versatility these customers were craving. With a post & beam gabled roof design and concrete tile roofing, the new space begs for attention. Archadeck of Austin “beefed” up the appeal of the porch cover with an extra-large overhang which keeps the saddle-style barstools the homeowner’s placed around the car area out of the elements in case a rain shower pops up. No stone was left unturned regarding inclusion of all the luxurious extras that make the space inviting and cozy day or night. Sconce lighting, can-style lighting and a ceiling fan allow for comfort even on those hot Texas afternoons or in the evening. The entire structure was meticulously matched to ensure it mimics the dolor tones and style of the existing home on the property. We installed a beautiful cedar ceiling to match the interior of the homeowner’s existing covered patio too.
The finished structure completes the perfect recipe for these homeowner’s to make the most out of their outdoor living enjoyment. It adds flavor and versatility to the way they now live outdoors, with a pinch of elegance and a dab of luxury, this outdoor room satisfies!

Austin covered spaces provide benefits beyond outdoor living enjoyment!
When you take into consideration the benefits that can be gained by making the decision to add a covered outdoor living space, such as a covered porch, or patio cover, to your backyard the first thing that comes to mind is probably increasing enjoyment. Enjoyment IS a major factor when designing a covered outdoor living space, however, the benefits do not end there. In honor of July being observed as National UV Safety Awareness month.
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are found in the United States each year. Melanoma, the most deadly of skin cancers, only accounts for about 4 percent of all skin cancer cases, however, it causes about 79 percent of skin cancer deaths. Data indicates, in Texas, the odds of getting skin cancer are increased. One in three Texans will develop some form of skin cancer. Texas ranks third in the nation for malignant melanoma, the deadliest of all skin cancers according to the Texas Medical Association.
Since most of the melanoma and non-melanoma cases are directly related to sun-exposure, skin cancer prevention and awareness education could greatly reduce the number of those affected. This includes being cautious and limiting the amount of exposure you get on your uncovered outdoor living space.
Archadeck of Austin specializes in both covered and uncovered outdoor living space designs. We can address your specific needs and desires in order to determine what type, or combination of, outdoor structure is the right “fit” for your lifestyle. For some homeowner’s, just having a deck, or patio, is not enough and their outdoor living space must meet specific needs. These can include sensitivity and concern from UV light, allergies and even dealing with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Some of our most popular protected structures include screened and covered porches, patio covers, pool pavilions, cabanas and even shade pergolas. With this in mind we want to take this opportunity to point out the health-conscience benefits of having a covered outdoor space on your property to utilize:
- Greatly enhances the look and curb appeal of your home and landscape
- Adds value to your home
- Is a comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors
- Is a great place for plants to thrive
- Provides emotional benefits of sunlight (increased Vitamin D and stress reduction) without harmful UV ray
- Can become a party room protected from sudden thunderstorms that pop from a clear blue sky
- Creates a room free from the irritants of seasonal allergies (screened rooms)
- Is a dining area with a clear barrier against pesky mosquitos and stinging insects (screened rooms)
- Is a pollen-free outdoor living room (screened rooms)
Austin Porch and Patio Covers:

This combination gives these Austin homeowners the best of both worlds, a deck with a screened porch to escape the mosquitoes and keep the outdoor living rolling.
Our custom covered porches and patios are designed to protect you overhead without reducing your connection with nature. From simple front porches to complete outdoor entertainment areas, our porch and patio covers will transform your home from the outside in.
Austin Screened Porches and Patios:
A screened porch allows you to enjoy being outside without worrying about inclement weather, harmful UV rays, pollen or insects. You can relax while you take in the view and gentle breezes of your beautiful outdoor surroundings from the comfort of a protected space. Screened porches and patios can also be used in conjunction with other outdoor structures such as a deck, patio, or even incorporate an outdoor fireplace kitchen to add more “flavor” to the design!
Shade Pergolas:
A pergola offers much potential to providing shade depending on the distance between the cross beams that cover the upper portion of the pergola. The construction of the pergola can be made more conducive to providing shade through the spacing between the cross beams located atop the pergola and by using wider rafters in the pergola design. The closer the beams are set, or the wider the rafters, the more sun protection your pergola will offer. All of these factors are influenced by the intended placement of your pergola in correlation to the direction and amount of sunlight your location receives. Archadeck of Austin can build your pergola with increased sun protection in mind while keeping the original design of your pergola intact. This may include integration of a Polygal cover into the design, curtains or blinds as we have many options available which can be customized to bring the most shade and comfort to your pergola addition.
If you are ready to enjoy the unbridled benefits of outdoor living while being smart about you and your family’s’ exposure to the sun. Contact Archadeck of Austin today at (515) 259-8282 or via email at jim.odom@archadeck.net to schedule a free design consultation. We can make sure your new outdoor structure is “made in the shade.”

Read all about our dreamy Austin, TX, deck addition featured in Qualified Remodeler magazine
Extra, Extra Read all About it!
As you are looking through the April 2016 issue of the Qualified Remodelers Magazine, you will find beautiful Outdoor Living Spaces highlighted that will have you dreaming of one for yourself. The good news is; a space like this is within reach with the right design and builder. Archadeck of Austin can turn your vision into a reality just as we did for these happy homeowners in Austin, Texas.
Starting on page 38 of the magazine, you will find a beautiful outdoor living space that Owner of Archadeck of Austin, Jim Odom, and TimberTown, a lumber and building materials dealer in Austin, TX, worked to complete. The extent of the project consisted of a complete tear down and rebuild. This meant creating a design to replace, enlarge and transform the existing cedar deck that stood in its place.
This beautiful 950 square foot elevated deck and porch was built with multiple living spaces to fit all needs, from outdoor dining to a peaceful haven you can appreciate day or night, while providing stunning views of the Cat Mountains that exceed the expectations of the homeowners. You can read more about the amazing details of this project in our article; “Custom features abound in this Austin, TX, elevated outdoor living space!”
One of Archadeck’s main priorities in deck building is to provide deck safety; that’s why we take the time to inspect the existing deck and see how we can improve upon the next structure. As you will read in the Qualified Remodelers Magazine, for this project we rebuilt the structure to new specifications and used 6-by-6-inch steal posts to properly secure the outdoor living space that sits 17-feet above a sloping site. For the railing we used a stainless steel baluster, or closely spaced supports, ensuring both safety and little obstruction of the amazing views.
Not only did we have the utmost safety in mind when building this deck, we wanted to extend the outdoor living space’s life by using Fiberon Horizons decking in Tudor Brown, which is capped (covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. This increases the durability and fade resistance of the deck, and provides a polished appearance all over. This type of decking requires very little maintenance with no sanding, staining or sealing, and leaves more time enjoy your outdoor living space with family and friends!

Finding Outdoor Living Bliss in Lost Creek
This project takes us to Lost Creek, directly beside Barton Creek in Southwest Austin. These homeowner’s hold a special place in our hearts here at Archadeck of Austin as we have worked with much of their family on previous projects and as always, they are a joy to design and build for.
The design of this porch cover began to take shape after the homeowners requested a remodel to their existing elevated, back deck. They wanted a larger space that would accommodate family and friends and also a measure of shade. As part of their goal to revamp the entire home, they started with the area that they planned to utilize the most frequent — the rear deck.
Upon inspection, we determined that the existing decking or the original space was in poor condition. Archadeck of Austin then removed the old deck and extended the footprint to better take in the scenic hilltop views. We used Fiberon Horizon low-maintenance decking in Tudor Brown. Horizon decking boards are capped (or covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. Four-side capping increases durability, enhances stain and fade resistance, and ensures a more polished appearance all around. Plus, Horizon boards feature two different wood grain patterns on the top and bottom for more design options and less on-the-job material waste. Horizon Decking also never needs sanding, staining or sealing which will allow these homeowners less worry of maintenance and more time for enjoyment in the new space!
In addition to upgrading the deck, we also installed an aluminum Structall patio cover with a stucco embossed finish to add shade and protection from the weather. Traditional wood frame covers require more maintenance and their construction can be costly, drawn-out and inconvenient. Structural aluminum covers install quickly, are more durable, require less maintenance, and can be easily converted to a room enclosure later. Structall covers are attractive. Their continuous textured surface is available in stucco or cedar embossed finishes, These enamel finishes are baked onto the metal surface, making them virtually maintenance-free. Structall covers are also durable and engineered to last.
To gain the desired height of the patio cover, Archadeck of Austin redesigned the placement of the addition by raising the beam 1.5′ enabling it to sit higher on the home’s roof. The original placement meant the structure would come off the home’s soffits, however through ingenious design we were able to provide the height the clients preferred.
The finished project is everything, and more, these Lost Creek homeowners had imagined. Now they can spend limitless weekends and afternoons with their close-knit family, grilling outdoors with a stunning view of the world around them —life is Good.

An Outdoor Living Oasis in Circle C Ranch That Was Three Years in the Making!
How often do you catch yourself thinking…”if I just had an unlimited budget and all the time in the world”? This is something we often hear during our initial consultation with homeowners, when we ask what they envision as their ideal outdoor living space. It’s a common misconception that the perfect outdoor living space is beyond affordable. Archadeck of Austin wants you to know you don’t have to delay creating your ideal backyard retreat any longer. We offer a phased building program that allows you to construct your outdoor living space combination project in phases as your lifestyle and/or budget permit.
We start by working directly with you to fulfill your vision of the ideal backyard retreat through the design of a “master plan” which details all the structures to be incorporated within your completed design. With this master plan in hand, we can divide the project into phases easier to swallow from a budgetary and lifestyle perspective.
One of our most recent completed projects is the perfect example of a project built in phases. The project is located in beautiful Circle C Ranch in South Austin. The first phase of the project consisted of modifying one end on the rear of the home with a stain & score concrete hardscape extension. The second, and final phase, consisted of adding a patio cover with a cozy corner fireplace. The project timeline spanned three years, and was just recently completed in 2016.
The project scope for the initial phase included excavation and repouring the tiered concrete patios and surround(s), this also allowed us to proactively pour the foundation for the upcoming open porch cover. Also during the second phase, changes were made to ensure the covered porch roof tucked into the soffit on an angle as to not obstruct the view coming from theback door of the home, as elevation was a specific concern in this area. We engineered and implemented the perfect solution through the use of a unique shed/hip roof design, which also mimics the rooflines found on of the existing home.
The finished patio cover includes a corner fireplace and serves as a versatile addition as it includes a special niche designed to house the homeowner’s TV. The fireplace is beautifully wrapped in stone complimenting the Cedar tongue and groove ceiling of the porch and enhancing the rustic vibe. We finished the space off with elegant sconce lighting.
Working closely with the homeowners and abiding by the projects master plan allowed Archadeck of Austin to work out engineering, designing and building specifics allowing for efficient future additions and amendments. To ensure a unified outdoor environment, the structural integrity, traffic flow and ultimate function of each portion of the project scope were priority considerations during each phase of building.
If you have a vision of your dream backyard but you’re not ready to complete it all at one time, our phased building program is the perfect answer. We can bring the backyard of your dreams to life one beautiful stage at a time. Contact Archadeck of Austin to learn more about our innovative approach to outdoor structure building. This spacious outdoor living space consists of an elevated, 2nd story low-maintenance deck and covered porch area with all the trimmings! The deck was built using Fiberon Horizons decking in Tudor Brown. Horizon decking is capped (or covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. Four-side capping increases durability, enhances stain and fade resistance, and ensures a more polished appearance all around. Plus, Horizon decking features two different wood grain patterns on the top and bottom to add more character to your deck design with less on-the-job waste. In addition, Fiberon decking requires no sanding, staining or sealing , ever. This means less worry over maintenance and more time to enjoy the finer things in life!
The beautiful deck is accented with custom-designed and constructed horizontal tubular railing that has been powder-coated black. Atop the railing, and expanding the entire perimeter of the space, Archadeck of Austin installed a double composite cap offset within with a super strong fabricated steel plate to prevent climbing on the railing. In addition to the safety factor, the double cap also serves as a luxurious bar area to use as a drink ledge measuring out to 11″, and is even large enough, standing at 42″, to pull up a bar stool and double as a impromptu spot for dining, conversation or enjoying a beverage while taking in breathtaking views of Austin proper.
We took the abundance of custom features a step further by designing and building integrated bistro-style seating out of the same composite used on the deck around the cedar posts of the covered porch portion of the space. We even designed a built-in bench for additional seating when entertaining friends and family. Last cut certainly not least, this outdoor living space picks up where other designs leave as an afterthought — evening enjoyment! The entire space is loaded with romantic LED outdoor lighting to aid in utilizing the space to its fullest potential in the evening, and creating ambiance.

Have you thought about adding a roof to your Austin deck?

Beautiful details like recessed cans, ceiling fans and rich hardwood ceilings can encompass the interior of your screened or covered porch.
Are you tired of the hot Texas sun beating down on you the entire season while trying to enjoy your deck? If so, we have the answer to your woes. We can, in many cases, turn your existing deck into a haven of shade and comfort by adding a roof and making it into an open porch or screened porch. Covered decks are the savvy way to enhance your existing backyard. We will inspect your existing deck to see if it can accommodate the addition of a roof. Often times we can reinforce the foundation enough to support a roof.
Open and covered porch transformations are a great way to add beauty and enjoyment to your landscape, and can also function as an outdoor room. Screened porches give you all the benefits of an open porch, but with added protection from the insects. Both structures are a viable option as long as your deck can accommodate the added weight. We can evaluate your existing deck to see if it fits the bill, and can often offer reinforcement to the structural components within your deck to ensure strength and structural compatibility with adding a roof.
Your new porch can be equipped with finishing touches such as lighting, ceiling fans, or even an area reserved for that glorious flat screen TV. The beauty of having a screened or open porch design is that is no limit to the interior reveals that can be brought into the mix. We often use bead board ceilings, rustic beams and recessed lighting in many of our screen porch designs. How ornate or rustic you make your space is all up to you.
If you are considering “putting a lid” on the hot sun this season by adding a roof to your deck, contact Archadeck of Austin, we can open up a new world of backyard opportunities for you and your family this summer. Call for a free consultation: (512) 259 – 8282 Austin@archadeck.net
Imagine the room right outside your back door.
Have you ever looked at your home and wished you could purchase adjoining acreage just to add on a playroom, living room other space to your existing home? Why not think about your ideal living space in a broader sense. The fact is there is a plethora of living enjoyment area right outside your back door that can be utilized more efficiently than an interior addition.
Living space doesn’t necessarily have to mean “interior” living space. There are a multitude of outdoor living structures that lend themselves to dining, entertaining, relaxing, and play. Today’s outdoor structure designs can be outfitted with all the same amenities an interior addition to your home can offer, and in some cases even more. Here are some ideas that will inspire you…

This cabana style covered patio has it all. An outdoor kitchen, fireplace and plenty of room to play.
The covered patio or porch
Covered patios keep you cool on hot days, and offer protection from the elements as well. They can be constructed from a vast array of materials such as wood, brick, stone and other hardscape material. Covered patios can be attached to your home or your deck, or can even be used as a freestanding structure within the landscape. Covered patios can also be situated beside your pool for a cabana style covered patio. Covered patios can be wired to accommodate ceilings fans, sound systems, computers, telephone, and even flat screen TV’s. Patio covers can include built-in fireplaces and even contain fully functional outdoor kitchens with all the fixings. These include refrigeration, sinks, food preparation areas, warming drawers, microwave, smokers, and grills. You name it, we can include it into the design of your patio cover. If you are looking for the perfect place to watch the game, and prepare a feast for your guests all while watching the kids play, the covered patio is an all-around best outdoor structure. An outdoor living room with mother nature as the backdrop.
The screen porch
The screened porch is another way to utilize all the amenities of an outdoor living room, minus the insects. Here in Texas, the warm temperatures will give you the benefit of year-round enjoyment of your screen porch. We also refer to these as sun porches and they make a perfect spot to relax and rewind. The beauty of a screened porch is that you get the pleasure of the outdoors without actually being outdoors. A screen porch offers an extension of outdoor as well as indoor living space.
Multi-structure outdoors living areas
We are starting to see a trend in multi-structure outdoor living areas. These are outdoor living areas that contain the works. These can include open patios, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and decks all in one. This offers homeowners the ultimate in luxury and convenience, not to mention adding to your home’s value. Our multi-structure designs are planned to compliment each structure as it flows together. Instead of getting an outdoor room, you are actually getting an outdoor paradise where each outdoor room or area caters to a specific function but also harmonizes with the other elements within the entire design. Imagine having an area right outside your back door where you can dine, cook, read a book, roast marshmallows, listen to the crackle of the fire on those cool Texas nights, entertain, or just enjoy the fresh air.
