Outdoor Living Access And Luxury Balanced With The Practical Consideration Of Adequate Outdoor Drainage

In a house that was brand spanking new, something was missing in the Travisso neighborhood in Leander, TX. Although the rear of the home had an open porch area with a single set of stairs leading to the rear landscape, that was about the size of it.

Before Archadeck of Austin began the new project.

What the family really wanted was an outdoor living space that checked several boxes, so they came to Archadeck of Austin.

After Archadeck of Austin worked their outdoor living design magic on the backyard space.

Practicality Was One Of The First Considerations

As everything drained from above down to the new home, we had to compensate for that in the building of the new structure. All of the home’s downspouts now run into a drain tile system and out into the yard. Details like this are what our Better Building mantra is all about.

That box being checked, this ambitious construction proceeded.

We started by removing the old stairs and railings and added a new concrete patio in a light broom finish with stone benches and integrated under-ledge lighting. The electrical conduit to achieve this was run under the patio and to the power source so no wires are exposed.

An outdoor kitchen area. Check.

An integrated hot tub. Check.

3 sets of stairs for access from multiple points surrounding the space. Check.

Secluded privacy when it is desired. Check.

Two sets of retractable screens for protection from outdoor nuisances when they occur. Check.

A fireplace to provide warm glimmers of atmosphere for those times when there is a chill in the air. Check.

It’s All About The Details

It may sound like it was all easy to achieve this configuration, but that’s because our expert team knew precisely how to achieve it all – in perfect balance.

We had to remove part of the original ceiling of the existing porch created by the homebuilder for the necessary electrical rework, most notably to power the retractable screens and the surrounding lighting.

Down at ground level, the hardscape accents were achieved with white chopped block in light nicotine, exquisitely brushed in a Roman stone pattern.

Below that, the exterior foundation of the new outdoor space perimeter was painted to complement the surrounding home exterior.

The enclosed ventless fireplace to the left of the retractable screens is a stone corner unit, powered by gas, to eliminate the muss and fuss associated with natural wooden logs.

To beautifully define the new outdoor area, and provide protection while in the space, as well as accessing it from the rear landscape, a black Fortress railing was added to the upper porch landing and stairs.

Much Ado About Something – Really Something

A feast for the eyes – as well as the soul – an outdoor home improvement of this style, scope, and magnitude is something we’d love to discuss with you at your convenience.

Patio, Pergola, Fire Pit Combination Transforms Liberty Hill, TX, Back Yard

Liberty Hill TX custom outdoor living

A wise man once asked, When you have a big ol’ back yard, why be satisfied with a teeny-tiny, little patio? We like where he was going with that thought! And we would add, Especially here in Texas!

completed project in Liberty Hill, patio pergola and fire pit

While it’s not entirely true that EVERYTHING’S bigger in Texas, Archadeck of Austin is doing our part to make it so, one patio at a time. The project we’re featuring today is a perfect example. The homeowners had a small patio at their back door. The door to the patio was also small, just a single door. The homeowners had big dreams of a better lifestyle that included a whole lot more patio enjoyment. To remedy the situation, they called Liberty Hill patio designer Archadeck of Austin.

Take a look before we began the project:

Our mission: increase the patio size, build a total shade pergola over most of the new patio area, add a fire pit, and install larger patio doors. Patio enjoyment would be theirs in no time.

Patio Builder Archadeck of Austin Makes Little Patios Bigger

Liberty Hill patio builders

Our first order of business was to increase the patio size.  Hardscapes and patios are some of our specialties! For this project, we built the additional patio areas with concrete, and we added a nice stamped overlay finish. We kept the patio width the same on one side, but on the other side we extended the patio along the length of the house. We extended the middle section of the patio out into the yard, the perfect spot for a fire pit. We ended the middle section with a rounded shape where we nestled the round fire pit. The patio encircles the fire pit beautifully with room for family and guests to pull up chairs all the way around the entire circle.

fire pit detail

The homeowners wanted a custom wood-burning fire pit, and for their fire pit materials, they selected white limestone with nicotine. The stone stands out nicely against the new, textured patio surface. It’s clear that we designed the rounded patio section and the fire pit to complement each other perfectly. The homeowners and their guests will spend many relaxing hours under the stars, mesmerized by the fire in their new fire pit.

under the new cedar pergolaShaded Patios are the Standard in Liberty Hill, TX

The tiny, original concrete slab patio was covered by a roof, completely shaded, and that was the one thing about the original patio the homeowners liked. They definitely wanted the extended patio to be shaded, too – except the end that would be reserved for fire-gazing and star-gazing.

For shade, we designed a custom pergola made of cedar that does more than just provide shade. It transforms the concrete patio from “a place in the sun” into “the place to be.” The big, sturdy pergola, with ornamental cuts on the ends of the support beam and the rafters, makes a statement! It is boldly decorative, and it also provides shelter. The homeowners wanted complete shade as well as protection from inclement weather, so we added a polycarbonate sheet on top of the pergola to make the patio weatherproof.

Patio Windows Can Easily Become Patio Door

Liberty Hill window to slider door

The homeowners wanted bigger patio doors, and they wanted those doors to offer a view of the back yard. Their original patio door gave them a view of a brick wall. Meanwhile, they had two nice-sized windows overlooking the patio and the back yard. Yes, these windows were occupying the space nature had surely intended for the placement of doors. Big doors that were also windows! The solution: remove the windows and install a pair of sliding glass doors.

Archadeck of Austin was up to this challenge. We removed the brick below the windows, removed the windows, and created a new door opening big enough for a set of sliding glass doors. Once we installed the new doors, we rebricked around them so you can’t even tell work has been done there. On the interior, we put in new drywall and headers above the doors. Our standards are high, and we do very good interior finish work when it’s called for. Inside and outside, the area surrounding the new doors looks impeccable and undisturbed. The homeowners have the bigger doors they wanted and a better view of the amazing new patio and the back yard.

Is There Anything Else We Can Do for You?

Clients are accustomed to seeing the “pretty” side of the work we do, but sometimes there’s another side, too. As part of this project, we also installed a drainage system for the yard. The homeowners had found that water running off of the house wasn’t draining well due to the slope and topography of the lot. We used a catch bucket and basin system to distribute any water from left to right to prevent rainwater from flooding the patio.

Liberty Hill pergola builder

Now these Liberty Hill TX homeowners have a much bigger patio with plenty of shade and room for grilling and dining outdoors. After dinner, they’ll enjoy their new fire pit. They couldn’t be happier with their combination patio-pergola-fire pit outdoor living project.

Covered Porch Addition in Pflugerville, TX, Shows Archadeck of Austin Does Whatever it Takes to Make Your Outdoor Living Dreams Come True

Looks can be deceiving, we all know that, and the saying certainly applies to this sweet covered porch addition we built for our clients in Pflugerville, Texas. The results are delightful and offer the homeowners a relaxing place to sit, lounge and dine outdoors. Their new porch gives them a space that’s protected from sun and rain and is illuminated for nighttime enjoyment. To say we made it look easy would be an understatement.

pflugerville tx porch builder

In a nutshell, this covered porch addition had a very complicated roof tie-in. To the uninitiated, it may not look like a big deal. Builders and remodelers, however, will immediately notice this was a complex job. The offset of the rooflines was the primary issue. We needed to tie together the new roof (the porch cover) with three connection points on the original roof to facilitate the addition of a roofed outdoor structure. Porch builder Archadeck of Austin was up to the task. We love a challenge!

Out With The Old …

  • We demolished the home’s small, concrete patio.
  • We removed the overhang above the back door.
  • We removed the soffit to allow for the installation of the roof rafters.
  • We removed the existing single back door and window into the dining area.
  • We removed a portion of the siding around the back door.

before and after in pflugervilleIn With The New …

We poured a new, larger concrete patio.

  • In place of the original overhang, we used 8 x 8 support posts and heavy beams that we could tie into the existing wall.
  • We built ridge walls up so they would extend into the ceiling.
  • For the roof tie-in, we built up the wall to carry the load of the beam that would tie into the roof.
  • We installed the new roof in a way that gave us enough room for a high ceiling area over the porch.
  • We built a new overhang and used the same type of shingles that are on the existing roof.
  • We installed a new header over the back door and a new Therma-Tru double door system featuring energy-efficient Low-E glass.
  • Once the new door was in, we replaced the siding with Hardieplank siding to seal the wall.
  • We installed Hardieboard siding on the interior of the covered porch.
  • We used Hardie wrap for the new beams, support posts, soffit and fascia.
  • We installed a beautiful beadboard ceiling and painted it blue!
  • We painted the support posts white to match the house and painted everything else to make it all look brand new.
  • We installed electrical wiring in the new porch roof for a ceiling fan and outdoor lighting.
  • We scored the new concrete patio in a 24″ tile pattern with a walnut-colored border and outside edge for contrast.
  • We installed a ceiling fan and four can lights in the porch’s beadboard ceiling.
  • We installed sconce light fixtures on the outside of the two support posts.

About That Beautiful, New Double Door System …

interior and exterior from double doors of view of pflugerville tx covered patio addition

The new double door makes better use of the space than the original back door and dining room window did. Haven’t we all had situations where we needed to bring something larger than a single door into or out of the house? The new door also updates the look of the back of the house. In that regard, the design impact of this door replacement is huge!

The Therma-Tru double door system features Low-E glass and a low-rise threshold. The door’s energy-efficient Low-E glass helps reduce the loss of heat in cold weather by reflecting heat back into the home. In warm weather, the sun’s rays reflect off of the Low-E glass, helping to keep the home cool inside.

About that Blue Porch Ceiling …

Blue porch ceilings have an interesting history. The practice of painting a porch ceiling blue seems to have begun in the South, but these days you can find them in all regions of the country. Folklore mixes with facts when it comes to explanations for this phenomenon.

pflugerville tx patio cover with blue interi

  • In the Low Country of South Carolina, “haint blue” porch ceilings mimicking the color of water were used to keep out “haints” – meaning ghosts, apparitions or lost souls – because these spirits were unable to cross water.
  • In Oregon, porch ceilings painted a shade called Aurora blue were associated with the Aurora Colony, a Christian communal society founded by emigrants, primarily German and Swiss, in the 1850s.
  • In New England, the color of a blue sky was used on Victorian porch ceilings to reflect colors found in nature. On gray days, a blue ceiling reminded residents that they would see brighter days ahead.
  • Finally, in some areas homeowners believed a blue porch ceiling would trick birds and insects into believing they had reached the sky, thereby discouraging them from building nests in the ceiling. In reality, these early blue paints were often made with milk and lye, and lye does repel insects. The milk paint faded and needed to be repainted each year, or every few years. A new coat of lye probably did keep insects away.

This is what we know: blue is considered a calming color and is associated with peace and relaxation. What better color to frame your new covered porch where you plan to spend countless hours relaxing and basking in nature’s glory?

1 Average-Sized Home + 1 LARGE Screened Porch = 1 Delightful Home, Just the Right Size in East Central Austin

East Central Austin Screened Porch BuilderThese East Central Austin homeowners proved you don’t have to have a large home to add a large outdoor living space.

After purchasing this home of about 1,400 sq. ft., our clients completely renovated the home’s interior, with absolutely beautiful results. Finally, they were ready to add a multi-purpose outdoor living space. Instead of asking Archadeck of Austin to design a space that was proportional to their small home, they wanted something bigger. Specifically, they wanted a big, open and airy screened porch, so the one we designed for them is over 600 sq. ft. in area. If you’re doing the math, they increased the size of their usable space by almost 50%. Because of Austin’s mild climate, they truly will be able to use all of this space throughout most of the year.

Austin Screened Porch Builder

The homeowners do a lot of work and entertaining at home, so they needed a larger space. They had a second reason for building this large porch: With all of the work they had done on the home’s interior to make it beautiful, they wanted the outside to be beautiful as well.

  1. Increase space
  2. Beautify exterior

Archadeck of Austin designed and built the perfect screened porch for this home. You can see how much room it has, enough for a spacious living area and a separate dining area, which could also serve as a home office when needed. It’s really the equivalent of two additional rooms. On the exterior, we matched the home’s original HardiePlank siding, so the addition blends seamlessly with the home and doesn’t look “added on.”

Austin Screened Porch Builder

On the inside of the porch, we started with a concrete floor and added a textured concrete overlayment in a color called California Smoke, which is a gray blend. For additional contrast, we added a bit more of a darker shade. For the beautiful ceiling we used prefinished tongue-and-groove ceiling planks from Synergy Wood.

Austin Screened Porch Builder

Finally, we installed four skylights to bring in as much natural light as possible. The clients were aware that adding a large porch can diminish the amount of natural light received in the home’s adjoining room, so they used skylights to minimize that impact—in addition to the huge screened window openings around three sides of the porch.

Austin Screened Porch Builder

The clients love their expanded home! With all of the work completed now, all they have to do is enjoy it.

Archadeck of Austin rescues Hayes County, TX, homeowners from unfortunate outdoor living space design

Hayes County TX Outdoor Living Space BuilderIn these pictures you see an outdoor living project gone awry and the results after we accepted the task of making it right. Archadeck of Austin designs and builds porches, patios, decks, outdoor kitchens, pergolas and more — and we can design any combination of those structures. Sometimes we start from scratch. Sometimes we take what another builder did before us, like a patio, and make it bigger and better (much better). Or we take something old like a worn out deck, tear it down, and build a new deck-patio-outdoor-kitchen combination in its place.

And then there are times like this. To set the scene, we are in Hayes County, TX, southwest of Austin, outside the Travis County limits. Our clients purchased a new home with an outdoor living space that was nothing like they wanted. It was a brand new home, and obviously it suited them in many ways or they wouldn’t have purchased it. But the outdoor living space at this home was getting a negative approval rating from the homeowners starting on Day 1.Before

The home’s original outdoor living space consisted of a covered concrete porch/patio with a small cedar deck attached. It was all very plain and unappealing. The homeowners knew someone could do a better job of designing and building a more functional and enjoyable space for them. Enter Archadeck of Austin to the rescue.

The first problem was the covered porch/patio needed to be screened in. Insects were driving this young family crazy and they needed a no-bug zone.Hayes County TX Outdoor Living Space Builder

Then, they wanted the small cedar deck extended to cover a larger expanse across the back of the house, and they needed a stairway directly from the deck down to the children’s play area in the yard.

It sounds simple enough, but it was actually a complex project. We took out the Hardie Board ceiling over the porch and replaced it with a beautiful tongue-and-groove ceiling by Synergy Wood. We removed part of the roof on one side and built a new roof extension that came out deeper toward the yard. Of course, you can’t tell a difference where we extended the roof; it all blends in and looks original, as it should.Hayes County TX Outdoor Living Space Builder

We also had to demo some brick off the wall on the outside of the house in order to attach some of the new work directly to the original concrete substructure. Finally, we built soffits to match the original construction so that everything tied together. Once we had finished, framed and painted, we were able to install a wall of screen. Now the original porch/patio is a screened porch with a TV and seating area, and on the other side of that screen the family has a bigger deck with sheets of cedar lattice along the underside.

It feels like all is now right with the world, at least in this corner of Hayes County, TX. Our work is done here, and we have the Before and After pictures to prove it.

What a difference an Archadeck of Austin porch cover can make!

North Austin Porch BuildersAh, the sun, glorious sun! When we feel chilly, sunlight warms the skin and thaws the chilly spots. But when we’re already warm … that big Texas sunshine can be downright uncomfortable. Escape is all we can think of. A sun umbrella? Not big enough. A porch roof? Aha! That’s the ticket. A new porch cover built by Archadeck of Austin? The best!

Archadeck of Austin was able to help these North Austin homeowners reclaim their backyard patio. The family enjoyed using their backyard pool, but the adjoining patio, uncovered, seemed to be a magnet for blistering sunshine that made sitting outside unbearable. They wanted to turn their unusable patio into an area where they could relax outdoors without being driven inside by the hot sun. A new porch roof would provide the comfort they craved.

The homeowners first met with Archadeck of Austin a year ago. In terms of ideas, they were ready to proceed with a covered patio/porch project, but their budget was not. They estimated they would be ready in early 2017. Fortunately, they were able to start a little sooner; they called us back in December 2016, ready to roll.

North Austin Porch Builders

Before

Our first task was to repair a large crack in the existing concrete patio. We cut out that portion of the concrete and filled it back in, and at the same time we added two more feet to the patio’s depth. The patio is now 24′ x 14′ — more space for outdoor living! While we were working with the concrete, we added a conduit so the homeowner could hook up his gas line with a flex line to grill out beyond the patio. That’s a convenience he will appreciate for years to come. Of course, the concrete cut-out/replacement and the additional square footage blend in seamlessly with the original patio surface.

North Austin Porch Builders

After repairing and enlarging the patio, we were ready to build the all-important porch roof. The addition of a roof is what changes this area from a simple patio into a porch — and into a new-and-improved outdoor living space. We were able to match the style and color of the home’s existing shingles so it all blends nicely.

North Austin Porch BuildersUnder the roof is a vaulted ceiling made of beautiful Synergy Wood, hand-stained and prefinished wood with warm, rich tones.  At the back of the porch, a ridge wall and flat ceiling/soffit, also built with Synergy Wood, provide a handsome transition from the painted porch wall to the vaulted wood ceiling. We added a full electrical package with a ceiling fan and built-in recessed lighting, and the homeowner mounted a flat-screen TV along the back wall. In the soffit area, we made sure to place the recessed lighting behind the TV so the images on the screen are not diluted when lights are on and the television is in use.

North Austin TX Porch BuilderWhile the back of the porch roof is tied into the home, the front rests on Hardie-wrapped beams and columns, which we painted to match the home. We added stone coping at the bottom of the columns to match what had been used around the hot tub and pool.

At the very end of the project, Sundek (the company that originally surfaced the home’s concrete pool surround) applied a cool-coat finish to the concrete. This finish provides a comfortable walking surface for bare feet by reducing heat build-up. It’s cooler than regular concrete, brick or tile, and it’s slip resistant, too!

The homeowners added comfy porch furniture and, voila! They have a comfortable, inviting covered porch enhanced by a ceiling fan, lights and TV. Gone is the blistering heat of the uncovered patio, a place no one wanted to be! They love, love, love their new outdoor living space and look forward to spending many relaxing hours there.

This covered porch promises to increase poolside pleasure exponentially!

Austin Poolside Porch Builder

When Archadeck of Austin began work on this project it was a diamond in the rough…

The homeowners had an existing porch that was nearly void of space to extend outdoor living activities. Their goal was to not only extend the existing space to enhance versatility but to also create an area that was more conducive to use alongside their newly installed backyard pool.

The project posed some difficult roofline obstacles due to the pitch of the roof of the existing home. Archadeck of Austin was able to come up with a final design that flows perfectly as if the new porch was original to the home.

before and after

before and after

The space is finished with HardiePlank siding matching the home on the exterior, along with a seamless gutter system. For aesthetics, the post system utilizes larger than normal posts which we wrapped in Cedar. We also created a wall that features a Touchstone drop down TV lift for easy access. The interior of the covered porch glows with beautiful details such as the Synergywood ceiling in Pine in Auburn. Take a look at the beautiful transformation in our project focus video from our YouTube channel:

These homeowners are beyond satisfied with their final project. Now they can enjoy their new backyard pool along with the covered porch simultaneously. This Austin Covered Patio Serves as the Perfect Outdoor Man Cave and Much More!

Austing Patio CoversThis patio cover in Austin, TX, by Archadeck of Austin is a true masterpiece of design.  As you can clearly see from the images, the space appears as if it has stepped off the pages and into reality from one of those glossy home & garden magazines.  Jim Schallon, our lead designer, came up with the concept on this structure.

Even though some would say this patio cover serves as the ultimate outdoor man cave area, the benefits of the space exceed just enjoying the big game outdoors. This space serves a multitude of uses, it can evolve as your needs evolve. From outdoor entertaining to relaxing by the fire. The presence of the TV provides a space for family movie night, watching home videos and much more! The possibilities are as endless as the imagination.

The floor of the patio features a textured overlay finish, this was present on both the existing (older) patio and the new concrete patio and featured a custom designed Texas Star in the center.  Having the advantage of a textural finish for the patio not only increases the aesthetic appeal of the space adding to the rustic nuances present in the natural stone used throughout the project, it also increases traction within the space. This makes the area easy to navigate even when outside weather conditions may be damp.

The focal point of the space is surely the large outdoor fireplace. Archadeck of Austin designed and built this fire feature and custom fire boxes attached using the same all natural stone used on the facade of the existing home. Since the homeowner’s wanted to attached a TV over the mantel of the fireplace, we ingeniously created a built-in space under the hearth that holds the electronic equipment for the TV. By working with the homeowner’s audio-visual professional, conduit was ran to perfect this feature and in addition a speaker system was installed within the ceiling of the space. Not only is the addition of these elements innovative, it also ensures the wiring and cords stay out of view promoting a clean, wireless atmosphere.

The exterior sunshades directly behind the outdoor fireplace were installed by a local company here in Austin. Austintatious Blinds that specializes in  a diverse array of blind and shutter solutions.  From custom wood shutters to polyscreens and other shade materials for exterior and interior residential and commercial use. These retractable shades allow the homeowners to block out the late afternoon sun.

Austin Covered Patio Interiors

The ceiling of the patio cover is simply stunning! We used Synergy Cypress E-Peck tongue and groove to get this amazing rustic look. Synergy products require no staining or sanding and come with an exterior grade protective polyurethane finish. You can also see a continuation of the rustic nuances evident in the ceiling are carried through the entire design including the cedar-wrapped posts. The railing we used is also cedar with aluminum balusters.

Take a look at this amazing project through the video we created for our Archadeck of Austin YouTube channel:

The homeowners are elated with the design, the process and of course, the finished patio cover!

Our recent covered patio and pergola addition in Leander, TX, proves that a space doesn’t have to be large to have a BIG impact

leander-tx-porch-buildersI think, often times, when a client looks to us to improve their outdoor living space or establish a new one, the assumption is the project has to be large in order to be effective. This is certainly not the case. A good outdoor living space design should not only speak to the scale of your existing home and landscape, it should also speak to the function you wish to carry out within the space as well as your budget.

Here at Archadeck of Austin our goal is to provide you with the most value through an outdoor living space that is customized to fit your specific needs. Not a cookie-cutter duplication or design. One of our most recent projects in Leander, TX, serves as the perfect example of an outdoor space that delivers based on functionality and keeping in scale with the architecture of the existing home rather than sheer size.

before-2When we first met with the homeowners to discuss their anticipated design, their only outdoor living space consisted of a small concrete builder-grade concrete patio. The homeowners wanted a space that was more conducive to the way they wanted to live outdoors. The patio has also been plumbed for the addition of a sink which influenced their desire to make sure their new space would include an outdoor sink.

interior-view-of-leander-tx-covered-porchOur completed design enhances the entire aesthetic and function of the backyard of this home. The new outdoor living space includes a gable roofed patio cover and freestanding pergola. To accommodate the needs of the client, Archadeck of Austin extended the existing patio with a curved orientation and added brick columns to match the masonry of the existing home. Cedar posts were used to support the roofed structures in unison with the brick columns. The pergola is supported by the roof extension of the covered patio portion of the design.

The interior ceiling of the patio cover features beautiful T1-11 with exposed rafters stained to add rustic flair to the area. An outdoor sink was installed, much to the owners pleasure, and this area includes a serving island and counterspace. Take a look at the before and after images of the transformation of this backyard beyond builder grade:

This Poolside Cabana in Leander, TX, Demands Attention!

Leander TX Poolside Cabana BuilderUnlike many of the poolside structures and cabanas that we design and build here at Archadeck of Austin, this recent project in the Crystal Falls neighborhood in Leander, TX, is the focal point of this backyard. Most of the designs we build that incorporate a pool environment require a side or angular placement.

For this structure, the placement was best suited directly behind the home, and pool. Since the property is so spacious and the area behind the pool is destined to remain natural green space, making the cabana the focal point of this backyard was a no-brainer.

With a unique New England style roof pitch, this cabana is loaded with comfort and convenient amenities. Natural stone and cedar are fluent within the space as they work together to create a rustic retreat for guests to indulge in a poolside snack, or wind down in front of the large outdoor fireplace featuring an integrated flat screen TV.

Leander TX Poolside Cabana Builder

The back wall and outdoor fireplace is built with Autumn blend Sandstone which was matched to the identical stone used on the primary home located directly across from the cabana. The outdoor kitchen is also built using the same Sandstone and features a Leuder’s stone cap which was also used on the hearth and mantle of the indulgent fireplace. For visual interest, we added openings to the back of the structure pictured framed in both stone selections. The ceiling of the cabana is finished with tongue & groove natural cedar, as are the trusses and posts seen throughout the space.

It’s clearly natural to see why the homeowner’s adore their new space. Since finishing the project, it has become a favorite destination for family and friends — even including a decorated holiday tree to add festive charm while using the space during the upcoming holidays. Nothing gives Archadeck of Austin more pride than to see how the addition of one of our custom outdoor spaces sparks excitement and anticipation of years of enjoyment…

It’s no secret that the Austin area has experienced a wetter than usual 2016 thus far. Though Texas has always been a land of weather extremes—in 1927, an unnamed National Weather Service meteorologist famously said “Texas is a land of perennial drought, broken by the occasional devastating flood”—This summer’s most recent flooding comes just five years after the driest year on record in Texas, in which statewide rainfall was just 14.88 inches.

Our year to date rainfall for Austin sits at 34.2 inches according to the Current Results weather an science facts website. With this in mind, outdoor living and recreation for many, has been hampered by the wet weather. Archadeck of Austin wants you to know that doesn’t have to be the case. As the Austin area’s premier outdoor living structure designer and builder we can create a space that is rainproof!

Our Recent Porch Cover in Riverplace is the Perfect Recipe for the Backyard Gourmet

Riverplace in Austin TX Porch CoversOutdoor kitchens are among one of the most popular of all the amenities in outdoor living design. They provide an area to prepare food outdoors and save an abundant amount of time that would normally be spent running back and forth to the kitchen within the home. Based on the accoutrements they contain, these outdoor marvels can aid you in storing, preparing and even keeping food warm and beverages cold.

In the case of our most recent completed project located in Austin’s Riverplace community which sits on the back of the Riverplace gold course overlooking the greens, the homeowner’s had a lovely existing kitchen atop a stunning patio, the only facet this space lacked was protection from the elements and shade. That’s where Archadeck of Austin enters the picture. These homeowner’s contact us to design and build a porch cover specifically for their existing outdoor kitchen.

Outdoor kitchen and patio before we built the porch cover.

Outdoor kitchen and patio before we built the porch cover.

The covered porch we designed and built is an asset to the landscape and provides the versatility these customers were craving. With a post & beam gabled roof design and concrete tile roofing, the new space begs for attention. Archadeck of Austin “beefed” up the appeal of the porch cover with an extra-large overhang which keeps the saddle-style barstools the homeowner’s placed around the car area out of the elements in case a rain shower pops up. No stone was left unturned regarding inclusion of all the luxurious extras that make the space inviting and cozy day or night. Sconce lighting, can-style lighting and a ceiling fan allow for comfort even on those hot Texas afternoons or in the evening.  The entire structure was meticulously matched to ensure it mimics the dolor tones and style of the existing home on the property. We installed a beautiful cedar ceiling to match the interior of the homeowner’s existing covered patio too.

The finished structure completes the perfect recipe for these homeowner’s to make the most out of their outdoor living enjoyment.  It adds flavor and versatility to the way they now live outdoors, with a pinch of elegance and a dab of luxury, this outdoor room satisfies!

Austin covered spaces provide benefits beyond outdoor living enjoyment!

National UV Safety Awareness monthWhen you take into consideration the benefits that can be gained by making the decision to add a covered outdoor living space, such as a covered porch, or patio cover, to your backyard the first thing that comes to mind is probably increasing enjoyment. Enjoyment IS a major factor when designing a covered outdoor living space, however, the benefits do not end there. In honor of July being observed as National UV Safety Awareness month.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are found in the United States each year. Melanoma, the most deadly of skin cancers, only accounts for about 4 percent of all skin cancer cases, however, it causes about 79 percent of skin cancer deaths. Data indicates, in Texas, the odds of getting skin cancer are increased. One in three Texans will develop some form of skin cancer. Texas ranks third in the nation for malignant melanoma, the deadliest of all skin cancers according to the Texas Medical Association.

South Austin Covered Patio Builder

Since most of the melanoma and non-melanoma cases are directly related to sun-exposure, skin cancer prevention and awareness education could greatly reduce the number of those affected. This includes being cautious and limiting the amount of exposure you get on your uncovered outdoor living space.

Archadeck of Austin specializes in both covered and uncovered outdoor living space designs. We can address your specific needs and desires in order to determine what type, or combination of, outdoor structure is the right “fit” for your lifestyle. For some homeowner’s, just having a deck, or patio, is not enough  and their outdoor living space must meet specific needs. These can include sensitivity and concern from UV light, allergies and even dealing with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Some of our most popular protected structures include screened and covered porches, patio covers, pool pavilions, cabanas and even shade pergolas. With this in mind we want to take this opportunity to point out the health-conscience benefits of having a covered outdoor space on your property to utilize:

  • Greatly enhances the look and curb appeal of your home and landscape
  • Adds value to your home
  • Is a comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors
  • Is a great place for plants to thrive
  • Provides emotional benefits of sunlight (increased Vitamin D and stress reduction) without harmful UV ray
  • Can become a party room protected from sudden thunderstorms that pop from a clear blue sky
  • Creates a room free from the irritants of seasonal allergies (screened rooms)
  • Is a dining area with a clear barrier against pesky mosquitos and stinging insects (screened rooms)
  • Is a pollen-free outdoor living room (screened rooms)

Austin screen porches

This combination gives these Austin homeowners the best of both worlds, a deck with a screened porch to escape the mosquitoes and keep the outdoor living rolling.

Our custom covered porches and patios are designed to protect you overhead without reducing your connection with nature. From simple front porches to complete outdoor entertainment areas, our porch and patio covers will transform your home from the outside in.

Austin Screened Porches and Patios:

A screened porch allows you to enjoy being outside without worrying about inclement weather, harmful UV rays, pollen or insects. You can relax while you take in the view and gentle breezes of your beautiful outdoor surroundings from the comfort of a protected space. Screened porches and patios can also be used in conjunction with other outdoor structures such as a deck, patio, or even incorporate an outdoor fireplace kitchen to add more “flavor” to the design!

South Austin Trex deck with overhead pergola

Yes — This is a pergola!

Shade Pergolas:

A pergola offers much potential to providing shade depending on the distance between the cross beams that cover the upper portion of the pergola. The construction of the pergola can be made more conducive to providing shade through the spacing between the cross beams located atop the pergola and by using wider rafters in the pergola design. The closer the beams are set, or the wider the rafters, the more sun protection your pergola will offer. All of these factors are influenced by the intended placement of your pergola in correlation to the direction and amount of sunlight your location receives. Archadeck of Austin can build your pergola with increased sun protection in mind while keeping the original design of your pergola intact. This may include integration of a Polygal cover into the design, curtains or blinds as we have many options available which can be customized to bring the most shade and comfort to your pergola addition.

Finding Outdoor Living Bliss in Lost Creek

Lost Creek Covered Deck Addtion and Extension in Southwest AustinThis project takes us to Lost Creek, directly beside Barton Creek in Southwest Austin. These homeowner’s hold a special place in our hearts here at Archadeck of Austin as we have worked with much of their family on previous projects and as always, they are a joy to design and build for.

The design of this porch cover began to take shape after the homeowners requested a remodel to their existing elevated, back deck. They wanted a larger space that would accommodate family and friends and also a measure of shade. As part of their goal to revamp the entire home, they started with the area that they planned to utilize the most frequent — the rear deck.

Before:

Before:

Upon inspection, we determined that the existing decking or the original space was in poor condition. Archadeck of Austin then removed the old deck and extended the footprint to better take in the scenic hilltop views. We used Fiberon Horizon low-maintenance decking in Tudor Brown. Horizon decking boards are capped (or covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. Four-side capping increases durability, enhances stain and fade resistance, and ensures a more polished appearance all around. Plus, Horizon boards feature two different wood grain patterns on the top and bottom for more design options and less on-the-job material waste. Horizon Decking also never needs sanding, staining or sealing which will allow these homeowners less worry of maintenance and more time for enjoyment in the new space!

Southwest Austin deck extension, redeck and patio cover

After — WOW!

In addition to upgrading the deck, we also installed an aluminum Structall patio cover with a stucco embossed finish to add shade and protection from the weather. Traditional wood frame covers require more maintenance and their construction can be costly, drawn-out and inconvenient. Structural aluminum covers install quickly, are more durable, require less maintenance, and can be easily converted to a room enclosure later. Structall covers are attractive. Their continuous textured surface is available in stucco or cedar embossed finishes,  These enamel finishes are baked onto the metal surface, making them virtually maintenance-free. Structall covers are also durable and engineered to last.

Porch cover detail

To gain the desired height of the patio cover, Archadeck of Austin redesigned the placement of the addition by raising the beam 1.5′ enabling it to sit higher on the home’s roof. The original placement meant the structure would come off the home’s soffits, however through ingenious design we were able to provide the height the clients preferred.

An Outdoor Living Oasis in Circle C Ranch That Was Three Years in the Making!

Circle C Ranch Covered Porch Builder South AustinHow often do you catch yourself thinking…”if I just had an unlimited budget and all the time in the world”? This is something we often hear during our initial consultation with homeowners, when we ask what they envision as their ideal outdoor living space. It’s a common misconception that the perfect outdoor living space is beyond affordable. Archadeck of Austin wants you to know you don’t have to delay creating your ideal backyard retreat any longer. We offer a phased building program that allows you to construct your outdoor living space combination project in phases as your lifestyle and/or budget permit.

We start by working directly with you to fulfill your vision of the ideal backyard retreat through the design of a “master plan” which details all the structures to be incorporated within your completed design. With this master plan in hand, we can divide the project into phases easier to swallow from a budgetary and lifestyle perspective.

Circle C Ranch Covered Porch Builder South Austin

One of our most recent completed projects  is the perfect example of a project built in phases. The project is located in beautiful Circle C Ranch in South Austin. The first phase of the project consisted of modifying one end on the rear of the home with a stain & score concrete hardscape extension.  The second, and final phase, consisted of adding a patio cover with a cozy corner fireplace. The project timeline spanned three years, and was just recently completed in 2016.

Circle C Ranch Covered Porch Builder South AustinThe project scope for the initial phase included excavation and repouring the tiered concrete patios and surround(s), this also allowed us to proactively pour the foundation for the upcoming open porch cover. Also during the second phase, changes were made to ensure the covered porch roof tucked into the soffit on an angle as to not obstruct the view coming from theback door of the home, as elevation was a specific concern in this area. We engineered and implemented the perfect solution through the use of a unique shed/hip roof design, which also mimics the rooflines found on of the existing home.

The finished patio cover includes a corner fireplace and serves as a versatile addition as it includes a special niche designed to house the homeowner’s TV. The fireplace is beautifully wrapped in stone complimenting the Cedar tongue and groove ceiling of the porch and enhancing the rustic vibe. We finished the space off with elegant sconce lighting.

Circle C Ranch Covered Porch Builder South AustinWorking closely with the homeowners and abiding by the projects master plan allowed Archadeck of Austin to work out engineering, designing and building specifics allowing for efficient future additions and amendments. To ensure a unified outdoor environment, the structural integrity, traffic flow and ultimate function of each portion of the project scope were priority considerations during each phase of building.

If you have a vision of your dream backyard but you’re not ready to complete it all at one time, our phased building program is the perfect answer. We can bring the backyard of your dreams to life one beautiful stage at a time. Learn how Archadeck of Austin changed the way these South Austin homeowners use their backyard

South Austin Patio BuilderOur outdoor living space addition in South Austin is a good example of the way Archadeck of Austin is changing the way homeowners are able to utilize, and enjoy their backyards. We are able to deliver these kind of results in two ways; #1 we can transform the vision of your ideal backyard and bring it to life from the ground up, an #2 we can convert an existing outdoor living structure into the backyard of your dreams. The possibilities are truly endless!

In the case of these South Austin homeowners, they had an existing outdoor space consisting of an aging backyard pond and an exposed aggregate concrete patio. The pond had become a chore to maintain as it had become a nursery for mosquitoes making spending time in the backyard a challenge to avoid being bitten, especially after dusk.

outh Austin Flagstone Covered Patios

Archadeck of Austin consulted with the homeowners and listened to their vision of what they wanted their backyard to be. They wanted a spot that was versatile in that they could find a respite from the hot Texas afternoons and relax in mosquito-free comfort. They still wanted to be able to take in the ambiance an open fire provided too, so the new design had to incorporate a fire pit. With these ideas in mind, we set out to bring their anticipated outdoor space to life.

South Austin Covered Patio Builder

There were some obstacles to overcome in order to give these South Austin homeowners the environment they wanted. One of which was having to finalize a design that would pass the impervious cover requirements needed for their localities. Once this was confirmed it was smooth sailing! The project also needed to be mindful of some drainage issues and maintain some space outside the covered porch to accommodate their outdoor grill.

South Austin Outdoor Living Environments

The completed project is multi-faceted and included transforming the concrete patio by way of installing flagstone atop the existing patio and covering a portion to give the homeowners the needed shade they desired. In addition to the extensive upgrades just off the rear of their ranch style home, we also created a detached space that includes a custom stone fire pit encircled with a hardscape retaining wall, which can also double as seating. The fire pit is just a stone’s throw away (no pun intended) from the covered patio which allows the spaces to be enjoyed simultaneously. To the side of the porch and connecting all the way to the driveway we constructed a patio/walkway using an Oklahoma variety flagstone on a bed of decomposed granite and pea gravel.  This allowed for a good solid surface but allowed any water to absorb into the soil.

South Austin Detached Fire Pits

The covered patio is finished a rustic ceiling, with exposed cedar rafters and T1-11 ceiling, which was stained to make it pop against the painted hardi wrapped posts/beams atop stone pillars. The covered patio also includes a ceiling fan to circulate the air on hot summer days and deters any insects from invading the space, plus some post sconces to light up the evening

Our Recent Addition in Circle C Ranch Proves That Change is Good!

This week’s featured project story takes us back to Circle C Ranch in South Austin, TX, where we totally transformed an existing backyard poolside patio and increased the aesthetics of the existing pool surround.

South Austin Porch Builders

Transformed outdoor living space in Circle C Ranch, from a cramped hot pergola to a comfortable and spacious covered porch!

When our talented lead outdoor living space designer, Jim Schallon, initially met with these Circle C Ranch residents they expressed their dilemma of not having enough room, or shade, to fully enjoy their existing backyard space. The space consisted of a pergola that was built atop their backyard patio that lacked space or harmony, and offered very little shade value. With these considerations in mind, Archadeck of Austin came up with a new design that transforms the look, feel and function of this South Austin backyard!

  • This image shows the existing pergola, which was cramped and hot, prior to breaking ground on the new design:

4-IMG_4002 - Copy

  • This images shows the completed covered porch addition. Notice how the new design expands the functional area out and beyond that of the homeowner’s original outdoor living space:

Covered porch addition in Circle C Ranch

Circle C Ranch patio cover in South Austin, TXThe entire project included removal of the existing pergola, including the original support columns, and building a new patio cover which extends further and wider than the previous outdoor space. The new space adds more outdoor living area, plenty of shade and is easily accessible from three entrances into the home. The original space only provided covered accessibility to two of three interior doors that provide entry onto the patio. In order to build the design according to plan, removal of the entire rear brick facade of the home was necessary. We carefully rebuilt the entire back brick facade paying special attention to match the exterior to the original, we also constructed the new brick support columns using the same masonry color and style. These columns were then topped off with Western red cedar posts to blend with the beautiful cedar tongue & groove ceiling on the inside of the patio cover.

South Austin outdoor bar builderAlong with the rustic beauty of the cedar details, the interior of the new transformed space includes an “eat in” style bar area that serves a myriad of uses; from outdoor dining to entertaining guests poolside. The new addition allows plenty of natural sunlight to reduce the chances of light being lost on the areas inside the home with Velux skylights installed into the ceiling of the new space. We also included plenty of recessed lighting and three ceiling fans to help air circulate on those balmy South Austin afternoons.

The improvements to this backyard did not end with the patio cover. Archadeck of Austin took this project a step further by improving the flow and tranquility of the homeowner’s backyard pool by unifying the addition from the top of the stairs behind the pool. We made sure to match the flagstone we used for this integration to the existing flagstone original to the area. The whole area now flows together as one, fun and relaxing outdoor room!

Our combination project in Lago Vista, TX, turns up the heat with outdoor living possibilities!

Lago Vista TX patio cover

This covered patio space was the first phase of the addition.

Archadeck of Austin recently completed the final stage of this dual-phased outdoor living combination project in Lago Vista, TX. The completed masterpiece includes a patio cover which serves as an outdoor living room for these homeowners complete with a custom natural stone fireplace and hearth. Within the covered patio we also created a well-stocked outdoor kitchen which houses an egg smoker, grill and refrigerator among other amenities.

Just a stones throw away from the covered patio is the pergola-style protected shade structure designed to house the family’s beloved smoker that has been handed down generation to generation. The area includes an integrated park-bench inspired seating wall perfect for teaching the subtle innuendos of perfecting the art of smoking meats. The addition of the separate smoker space came about after the homeowner moved the existing perimeter fence out to accommodate the anticipated design in 2014.

Completed project in Lago Vista, TX.

This image shows both phases of the addition completed.

Although, outdoor food preparation and outdoor dining is high on the homeowners list of favorite things, they also have a soft spot for natural and native materials. This is evident throughout the space in their choice of materials. Archadeck of Austin perfected the design of both outdoor living additions to compliment the rustic wood used in conjunction with natural stone.

Lago Vista patio cover with outdoor fireplace and kitchen

The materials used within the patio cover consists of a tongue and groove cedar ceiling with posts and beams, including engineered beams, wrapped in cedar and stone. The spacious fireplace within the space is crafted from a combination of sandstone, limestone and Leuders stone. In the outdoor kitchen area we continued the use of Leuders stone and topped the kitchen area off with a beautiful natural granite countertop.

Lago Vista pergola style covered space

We continued the materials used in the covered patio, (phase one of the project), into the pergola-style covered space designed for the homeowner’s smoker. Here, we also used cedar and natural stone throughout.

The finished outdoor living combination is a raving success with these Lago Vista homeowners. They now have a backyard retreat that is overflowing with possibilities. This covered patio in Austin looks great from every angle.

When you think of a covered patio design often times your mind will automatically picture a square structure under a hip roof. The fact of the matter is that our covered patio designs don’t fall into a generic, cookie cutter style. Many times your ideal design and roof type can be something quite different and unique. When we design an outdoor structure area that is connected to, or in close proximity to you existing home we consider all the factors that keep the design original to your home’s materials and structural details.

Archadeck of Austin octagonal covered patios

The octagonal roofline of the patio cover adds as much beauty to the inside of the structure as it does the outside.

We recently completed a project in Austin that takes the covered patio to a whole new level. This covered patio includes an outdoor kitchen, an outdoor fireplace and abundant space all under an octagonal roof design. This type of roof is often used when building gazebos and when used as a covered patio roof delivers dramatic beauty evident from the backyard as you look up to the structure and on the interior on the structure as you look at the interior ceiling of the patio. We also used a king-truss which spans the width of the patio and serves as much for aesthetic appeal as for support. The result is stunning.

The material choices for this covered patio in Austin, TX make this space a true gem of dazzling design.

Not only does this covered patio feature a unique roofline, it is also packed with every luxurious amenity that you can get in a covered patio design. We detailed the extensive  use of high-quality materials in our last post by Archadeck of Austin, the materials combined with the space this area offers the homeowners takes an otherwise vacant space and creates the feel of an outdoor family room. The brick and white limestone fireplace expanses plenty of room for comfortable outdoor furnishings to surround it so this family can curl up by the fire any day of the week. Above the fireplaces’ mantel we pre-wired the conduit through the fireplace so no wiring is visible to the naked eye for the homeowners to mount their flat-screen TV. The large gourmet outdoor kitchen gives them the freedom to leave their indoor kitchen any time they like and prepare and dine together outside on their new covered patio. We included plenty of lighting and ceiling fans in the design to make sure no creature comfort was left behind. The space also offers endless entertaining possibilities because of the amenities and spacious square footage contained under roof.

This image shows all the elements working together; the stucco skirting, brick, limestone and even the custom iron rail.

From the backyard the covered patio is a design masterpiece, from the custom iron staircase that spills gracefully into the beautifully landscaped backyard to the stucco finished skirting used around the base of the covered patio to give it a finished look that ties it into the existing home perfectly. The image that comes to mind when I see the completed project is a photographer searching for the “best angle” to photograph a shot of his subject. This covered patio is full of angles and it looks beautiful from every one of them. This space delivers everything you would want in a covered patio design; harmony, functionality, cohesive tie-in to the existing home and it also increases the value of the existing home with the added outdoor living space.

The materials make the difference in this covered patio addition in Austin, TX

The material choices for this covered patio in Austin, TX make this space a true gem of dazzling design.

Austin TX gazebo style hip roof covered patiosAt first glance, when you look at this recently completed addition in Austin, TX  you will assume it to be a typical covered patio under a roof that mimics the look of a large gazebo, but indeed it is so much more than that. At closer inspection you will see the covered patio has all the amenities that make an outdoor structure great. The space contains an outdoor kitchen, abundant dining and seating space and an outdoor fireplace. The materials used in this construction are some of the finest used in outdoor structure designs.

Austin outdoor fireplace builder

A limestone decorative arched key and custom mantel grace the facade of the patio’s outdoor fireplace.

On the outdoor fireplace we used a combination of brick that was chosen to match the brick used on the existing home and stunning white limestone. We used the limestone on the hearth and firebox that surround the fireplace and also added a decorative key made of limestone into the area right above the hearth. We also carried the use of limestone into the outdoor kitchen area where we used it to finish out the area on the side of the bar. Limestone is a solid choice for use in outdoor structures such as these, not only for its beauty but also for its density. Limestone is a dense sedimentary rock that is very hard. On this project we used white limestone, but limestone is available in a wide range of colors such as vanilla, beige, tan and darker hues like taupe and dark wood tones. Using limestone can also help bridge the gap between two separate design styles. Limestone is a transitional material and adding it in small touches or in a wide spectrum can help you mix two styles such as traditional and modern more easily.

Austin Limestone outdoor kitchens

We combined Limestone and granite counter tops to the outdoor kitchen to make the area unforgettable.

Austin outdoor fireplace expertsAlong with using limestone around the side of the bar/serving area in the patio cover’s outdoor kitchen area, we also brought in granite for the counter-tops in a complimentary neutral color. Granite is another natural stone. Granite is quarried from natural granite beds in large deposits beneath the earth’s surface. It comes in a wide arrange of hues from pink to black and is perfect for use in kitchens because of its resistant to man-made mishaps that are common in a kitchen setting. Granite is alkali and acid resistant, boiling water, oils, and wines will not affect the granite and granite is easy to clean. The material also offers resiliency to cuts and scratches as well.

The floor of the patio cover is finished in beautiful 12 x 12 ceramic tiles which carry the theme of natural stone influence used in the entire design of the space. Tile is easy to clean and will withstand the test of time better than wood, and it also stays cooler in the warm Texas weather and helps keep the space cooler by a few degrees. The use of stone, combined with the ceiling fans we installed in the covered patio will equal more enjoyment on the patio on those sultry days.Austin custom iron railings

As you descend off of the covered patio into the beautifully landscaped backyard you will also notice the clever use of high-quality composite decking on the steps. This will make for easy upkeep and low-maintenance in keeping this stairway looking like new for many years to come. We paired the rich hues used in the steps alongside a custom iron railing for added elegance.

The entire completed project exudes an elegance that ties in all the uses of various materials into an eclectic style. The Austin homeowners are ecstatic about all the outdoor living opportunities their space has opened up for them. They view the covered patio as an extension of living space, and look forward to enjoying all it has to offer in the years to come.
