Archadeck of Austin Rewrites History Through a Screened Porch Addition on this South Austin Historic Home

South Austin screened porch addition on 1907 homeHere at Archadeck of Austin, we have the opportunity to work on all styles of home. From ultra-contemporary to the traditional “old Texan style ranch.” However, it is always a treat to design an outdoor living space on a historic home. One of our most recent screened porch additions took us to the historic area of South Austin. Though working on a vintage era home can present its challenges, it is also a rewarding experience for our team.

The original home was built in 1907, and was relocated to South Austin from Taylor, TX. The home can be classified as a bungalow-style, post and beam home. The main objective our design team had to meet was that the new screened porch compliment or “gel” appropriately with the style and design of the old home. The homeowners are also avid bird lovers and enjoy sitting outside and watching the parrots that frequent this area. Having a protected area to view the birds and enjoy the outdoors was important to them and the driving factor they chose a screened porch over other outdoor structures.

South Austin Screened porch builders

Archadeck of Austin added a new chapter to the history of this 1907 home, with a new screened porch addition!

To stay in-keeping with the lines and style of the home, we built the new screened porch with materials that mimic the vintage charm of the existing home. These include the rustic cedar used on the exterior and stairs and the all-steel-roof that was custom-made to our specifications to appear original and the exterior siding that was matched, and painted along with entire rear of the home. To take the originality a step farther, we even retained the same height on the soffits of the addition so the new porch flows perfectly.

Interior details of South Austin screened porch on vintage home

The interior of the screen porch is overflowing of antique-inspired character with an open rafter, tongue & groove cedar ceiling. Even the AZEK porch flooring the homeowner’s chose for the deck has retro appeal. The color they chose is called “slate gray” and delivers a relaxed washed hue that mimics the look of time-worn wood. In addition, the tongue and groove features eliminated the need to install screen under the porch, keeping the structure protected from insects and debris that could creep in from the outside.

Starting on page 38 of the magazine, you will find a beautiful outdoor living space that Owner of Archadeck of Austin, Jim Odom, and TimberTown, a lumber and building materials dealer in Austin, TX, worked to complete. The extent of the project consisted of a complete tear down and rebuild. This meant creating a design to replace, enlarge and transform the existing cedar deck that stood in its place.

Jim Odom Archadeck of Austin Qualified Remodeler Magazine

This beautiful 950 square foot elevated deck and porch was built with multiple living spaces to fit all needs, from outdoor dining to a peaceful haven you can appreciate day or night, while providing stunning views of the Cat Mountains that exceed the expectations of the homeowners. You can read more about the amazing details of this project in our article; “Custom features abound in this Austin, TX, elevated outdoor living space!

Austin Fiberon Deck BuilderOne of Archadeck’s main priorities in deck building is to provide deck safety; that’s why we take the time to inspect the existing deck and see how we can improve upon the next structure. As you will read in the Qualified Remodelers Magazine, for this project we rebuilt the structure to new specifications and used 6-by-6-inch steal posts to properly secure the outdoor living space that sits 17-feet above a sloping site. For the railing we used a stainless steel baluster, or closely spaced supports, ensuring both safety and little obstruction of the amazing views.

Not only did we have the utmost safety in mind when building this deck, we wanted to extend the outdoor living space’s life by using Fiberon Horizons decking in Tudor Brown, which is capped (covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. This increases the durability and fade resistance of the deck, and provides a polished appearance all over. This type of decking requires very little maintenance with no sanding, staining or sealing, and leaves more time enjoy your outdoor living space with family and friends!

This Versatile Pergola in Bee Cave, TX, is Nothing Short of a Modern Marvel

Bee Cave TX contemporary pergola

A pergola is often designed as an outdoor room that provides a light, airy and inviting space to relax, dine or just admire. Pergolas are much larger than arbors and are generally freestanding, but can be attached to another building. You can also add amendments for more shade and to accommodate climbing vines. Because a pergola can be freestanding, you won’t need to make any complicated connections between the house or roof and the pergola, which is a definite advantage for many homeowners looking to add an outdoor space to an area within the landscape. Though this defines a pergola from a text-book perspective, the pergolas we design here at Archadeck of Austin are far from the generic description. Case in point is our pergola addition in Bee Cave, TX, that is nothing short of a modern marvel….

When you imagine a pergola, the first thing that probably comes to mind is an outdoor structure used to generate a variable amount shade and serve as a focal point to a backyard. These are certainly viable benefits of adding a pergola to an outdoor space, however, this pergola is so much more!

Bee Cave TX pergola designs

When we met with the homeowners to discuss their vision, their objective was to get as much covered space as possible within their budget. They were also very specific about where they wanted the lines of the addition to go. This two-story home sits on a hilltop amid their 10 acre homestead with an ” old Texan” feel. The placement of the covered space was at the end of their spacious backyard pool. The design we were asked to create for them needed to provide versatile functionality and bring more than just aesthetics poolside too.

Poolside pergola addition in Bee Cave TX

Our talented design team here at Archadeck of Austin are experts at translating the needs and desires of our clients’ into our outdoor living spaces. For this project, we designed a pergola with a metal roof. The interior of the pergola is spacious enough at 20′ x 15′ to facilitate a changing area covered in cedar slats at one end. In addition, the addition serves as the perfect spot for the homeowner’s to store pool supplies when not in use.

Contemporary Outdoor Living Space Designer and Builder Austin TX

The pergola also serves as a place for respite and poolside viewing for the family. Plenty of electrical outlets, a large ceiling fan and outdoor lighting make this space right for outdoor living anytime, day or night!

The homeowners agree — their new pergola addition scores a hole in one for satisfaction!

Finding Outdoor Living Bliss in Lost Creek

Lost Creek Covered Deck Addtion and Extension in Southwest AustinThis project takes us to Lost Creek, directly beside Barton Creek in Southwest Austin. These homeowner’s hold a special place in our hearts here at Archadeck of Austin as we have worked with much of their family on previous projects and as always, they are a joy to design and build for.

The design of this porch cover began to take shape after the homeowners requested a remodel to their existing elevated, back deck. They wanted a larger space that would accommodate family and friends and also a measure of shade. As part of their goal to revamp the entire home, they started with the area that they planned to utilize the most frequent — the rear deck.

Before:

Before:

Upon inspection, we determined that the existing decking or the original space was in poor condition. Archadeck of Austin then removed the old deck and extended the footprint to better take in the scenic hilltop views. We used Fiberon Horizon low-maintenance decking in Tudor Brown. Horizon decking boards are capped (or covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. Four-side capping increases durability, enhances stain and fade resistance, and ensures a more polished appearance all around. Plus, Horizon boards feature two different wood grain patterns on the top and bottom for more design options and less on-the-job material waste. Horizon Decking also never needs sanding, staining or sealing which will allow these homeowners less worry of maintenance and more time for enjoyment in the new space!

Southwest Austin deck extension, redeck and patio cover

After — WOW!

In addition to upgrading the deck, we also installed an aluminum Structall patio cover with a stucco embossed finish to add shade and protection from the weather. Traditional wood frame covers require more maintenance and their construction can be costly, drawn-out and inconvenient. Structural aluminum covers install quickly, are more durable, require less maintenance, and can be easily converted to a room enclosure later. Structall covers are attractive. Their continuous textured surface is available in stucco or cedar embossed finishes,  These enamel finishes are baked onto the metal surface, making them virtually maintenance-free. Structall covers are also durable and engineered to last.

Porch cover detail

To gain the desired height of the patio cover, Archadeck of Austin redesigned the placement of the addition by raising the beam 1.5′ enabling it to sit higher on the home’s roof. The original placement meant the structure would come off the home’s soffits, however through ingenious design we were able to provide the height the clients preferred.

The finished project is everything, and more, these Lost Creek homeowners had imagined. Now they can spend limitless weekends and afternoons with their close-knit family, grilling outdoors with a stunning view of the world around them —life is Good.

Learn how Archadeck of Austin changed the way these South Austin homeowners use their backyard

South Austin Patio BuilderOur outdoor living space addition in South Austin is a good example of the way Archadeck of Austin is changing the way homeowners are able to utilize, and enjoy their backyards. We are able to deliver these kind of results in two ways; #1 we can transform the vision of your ideal backyard and bring it to life from the ground up, an #2 we can convert an existing outdoor living structure into the backyard of your dreams. The possibilities are truly endless!

In the case of these South Austin homeowners, they had an existing outdoor space consisting of an aging backyard pond and an exposed aggregate concrete patio. The pond had become a chore to maintain as it had become a nursery for mosquitoes making spending time in the backyard a challenge to avoid being bitten, especially after dusk.

outh Austin Flagstone Covered Patios

Archadeck of Austin consulted with the homeowners and listened to their vision of what they wanted their backyard to be. They wanted a spot that was versatile in that they could find a respite from the hot Texas afternoons and relax in mosquito-free comfort. They still wanted to be able to take in the ambiance an open fire provided too, so the new design had to incorporate a fire pit. With these ideas in mind, we set out to bring their anticipated outdoor space to life.

South Austin Covered Patio Builder

There were some obstacles to overcome in order to give these South Austin homeowners the environment they wanted. One of which was having to finalize a design that would pass the impervious cover requirements needed for their localities. Once this was confirmed it was smooth sailing! The project also needed to be mindful of some drainage issues and maintain some space outside the covered porch to accommodate their outdoor grill.

South Austin Outdoor Living Environments

The completed project is multi-faceted and included transforming the concrete patio by way of installing flagstone atop the existing patio and covering a portion to give the homeowners the needed shade they desired. In addition to the extensive upgrades just off the rear of their ranch style home, we also created a detached space that includes a custom stone fire pit encircled with a hardscape retaining wall, which can also double as seating. The fire pit is just a stone’s throw away (no pun intended) from the covered patio which allows the spaces to be enjoyed simultaneously. To the side of the porch and connecting all the way to the driveway we constructed a patio/walkway using an Oklahoma variety flagstone on a bed of decomposed granite and pea gravel.  This allowed for a good solid surface but allowed any water to absorb into the soil.

South Austin Detached Fire Pits

The covered patio is finished a rustic ceiling, with exposed cedar rafters and T1-11 ceiling, which was stained to make it pop against the painted hardi wrapped posts/beams atop stone pillars. The covered patio also includes a ceiling fan to circulate the air on hot summer days and deters any insects from invading the space, plus some post sconces to light up the evening

The clients are elated with their new backyard — which is far more than just an outdoor living space, it is a completely new outdoor living environment! Archadeck of Austin creates a cozy and contemporary outdoor space to enjoy day and night!

Austin patio roof and rail detailPart of what makes my job so rewarding is the transformation process. This process goes beyond transforming an aged, or less than functional outdoor living space into a beautiful asset to the clients’ home and property. The reward comes from reading the excitement and satisfaction on their face and knowing the enjoyment they will get from the new outdoor living space for years to come! This is exactly the kind of project our recent transformation in Austin was. Archadeck of Austin turned an outdoor area consisting of an aging wooden deck into a cozy, contemporary patio that promises day and evening outdoor living.

Before the transformation began:

Before the transformation began:

After meeting with the homeowners’ and discussing their desires and needs we went to work on a design that would compliment their home and allow them to partake in the outdoor lifestyle they craved. The new design includes a tile covered patio, inviting steps, and iron railing and is loaded with upscale, contemporary style. During construction of the project the homeowners’ also decided to add the pergola and replace two wooden gates on each aid of the yard access.  The gates on both sides of the house were old and in disrepair.

Austin custom gates

The client asked us to design an attractive center opening wide gate design with powder coated metal posts, cedar deck boards mounted vertically in an interesting pattern.

The slab was a little over two feet above grade and was poured flush with the existing patio and attached via rebar doweled into the foundation.  Provisions were made prior to pouring the foundation for the low-voltage lights and the electrical connection for a ceiling fan to be placed under the pergola.  The client’s chose a Madison Silver porcelain tile in rectangular pieces which were laid over the new surface and existing patio. A tile schluter was used to avoid cracking of tiles between the new and old patios .  The sleek railings are Fortress rails with LED Fortress post cap lights. The addition of lighting added to the times the homeowners’ can now enjoy their new space, without limitations and bathed in ambient light!  The pergola is built from western red cedar with a bracket attached at the roof fascia.

Austin Patio Builder

In addition to the changes made to their outdoor living space, the clients’ also replaced all their existing gutters and repainted the entire house to compliment the tile choice — a total transformation indeed!

Our Recent Addition in Circle C Ranch Proves That Change is Good!

This week’s featured project story takes us back to Circle C Ranch in South Austin, TX, where we totally transformed an existing backyard poolside patio and increased the aesthetics of the existing pool surround.

South Austin Porch Builders

Transformed outdoor living space in Circle C Ranch, from a cramped hot pergola to a comfortable and spacious covered porch!

When our talented lead outdoor living space designer, Jim Schallon, initially met with these Circle C Ranch residents they expressed their dilemma of not having enough room, or shade, to fully enjoy their existing backyard space. The space consisted of a pergola that was built atop their backyard patio that lacked space or harmony, and offered very little shade value. With these considerations in mind, Archadeck of Austin came up with a new design that transforms the look, feel and function of this South Austin backyard!

  • This image shows the existing pergola, which was cramped and hot, prior to breaking ground on the new design:

4-IMG_4002 - Copy

  • This images shows the completed covered porch addition. Notice how the new design expands the functional area out and beyond that of the homeowner’s original outdoor living space:

Covered porch addition in Circle C Ranch

Circle C Ranch patio cover in South Austin, TXThe entire project included removal of the existing pergola, including the original support columns, and building a new patio cover which extends further and wider than the previous outdoor space. The new space adds more outdoor living area, plenty of shade and is easily accessible from three entrances into the home. The original space only provided covered accessibility to two of three interior doors that provide entry onto the patio. In order to build the design according to plan, removal of the entire rear brick facade of the home was necessary. We carefully rebuilt the entire back brick facade paying special attention to match the exterior to the original, we also constructed the new brick support columns using the same masonry color and style. These columns were then topped off with Western red cedar posts to blend with the beautiful cedar tongue & groove ceiling on the inside of the patio cover.

South Austin outdoor bar builderAlong with the rustic beauty of the cedar details, the interior of the new transformed space includes an “eat in” style bar area that serves a myriad of uses; from outdoor dining to entertaining guests poolside. The new addition allows plenty of natural sunlight to reduce the chances of light being lost on the areas inside the home with Velux skylights installed into the ceiling of the new space. We also included plenty of recessed lighting and three ceiling fans to help air circulate on those balmy South Austin afternoons.

The improvements to this backyard did not end with the patio cover. Archadeck of Austin took this project a step further by improving the flow and tranquility of the homeowner’s backyard pool by unifying the addition from the top of the stairs behind the pool. We made sure to match the flagstone we used for this integration to the existing flagstone original to the area. The whole area now flows together as one, fun and relaxing outdoor room!

Our AZEK Deck Addition in Leander, TX, is Pure Enjoyment and Super Low Maintenance!

Leander TX AZEK deckBeing in the business of designing and building one-of-a-kind outdoor living spaces keeps us “in the know” about the best decking materials on the market. Our goal is to create a space that brings our clients the most enjoyment outdoors with the least amount of maintenance on their end.  Archadeck of Austin is able to deliver almost maintenance-free outdoor living spaces through the use of many high-quality synthetic decking and porch material choices we offer to our clients. At the top of this list is AZEK decking.

Unlike other synthetic decking materials, that are wood/plastic composites or synthetics that contain a wooden core, AZEK is constructed of a cellular PVC material with a polymer cap for superior stain and scratch resistance. This material is solid and durable with a density similar to wood, but unlike wood, AZEK  allows for maximum enjoyment with low maintenance. AZEK is impervious to insects and rot and stays 15 -30% cooler than typical wood or composite decks, making it the perfect choice for pool and spa decks, and welcome news for those bare feet! AZEK’s decking warranty is also something to smile about. Unlike other synthetics that come with a 25 year, pro-rated warranty, this decking product comes with a lifetime, limited warranty.

Jim Schallon, senior designer Archadeck of Austin.

One of our most recent projects takes us to Leander, TX, where our senior designer, Jim Schallon, has created a stunning low-maintenance dream deck for homeowners in the new Travisso neighborhood. Jim’s background in outdoor living space design and building, and all facets of exterior residential building spans more than 30 years. He is a huge asset to our team and his talent shines through on each of his stunning projects!

The deck is built of AZEK decking in Hazelwood and the trim is built using Morado, both from AZEK’s Arbor Collection. The railing is beautiful black gloss Fortress iron railing which compliments and contrasts the neutral tones of the decking perfectly. The skirting on the perimeter of the deck was completed in Hardie board and painted to match the colors of the existing home. We took the design a step further by adding concrete pads at the base of the stairs to avoid a slippery surface and to reduce the debris that is tracked onto the deck from the backyard. The homeowners’ plan to install a retractable sunscreen to shade the area from the mid-afternoon sun.

Our Austin Elevated Deck and Porch Project in Steiner Ranch is the Epitome of Rustic and Romantic!

One of our recent projects in the Steiner Ranch area of Austin, TX, takes outdoor living enjoyment and beauty to a whole new level. The project incorporates an elevated deck and porch cover we designed to become one with the surrounding landscape while still looking original to the home.

Cedar deck and porch cover in Steiner Ranch, Austin, TX

In this era of synthetic materials, it is refreshing to design a space that incorporates the rustic benefits of natural wood. Archadeck of Austin uses a diverse selection of materials including composite, PVC, metal and many natural woods as well as stone native to the Austin area. For this project, we used aromatic cedar almost solely, including cedar flooring and a flat cedar ceiling within the covered porch space of the project.

Along with the aesthetic appeal of Cedar, it also resists moisture and insect infestation. Even if it is left untreated, it weathers to a silvery gray over time. Cedar also has remarkable dimensional stability. This means the wood has minimal change in size or dimension despite weather, humidity or temperature conditions. Many types of wood will warp when subjected to moisture, but cedar stays straight and flat which makes it perfect as a decking material.

Steiner Ranch All Cedar deck and porch in Austin, TX

The covered porch portion of outdoor living combination is easily accessible from the interior of the home and adds valuable living space perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining. The Cedar hip roof over the porch extends out further than most traditional roofed designs in order to add an extra layer of protection from wind and rain. This allows the homeowners to utilize the space in almost any weather. The outdoor space then extends via a stepped-down area into a spacious all cedar deck perfect for grilling, conversation and star-gazing into the open Austin sky. The design as a whole really is the epitome of having the best of both worlds for these Steiner Ranch homeowners to use at their leisure!

As is evident from the pictures above, the entire outdoor living space melds into the landscape as if it has always belonged there. This ingenious design takes native to a whole new level by the subtle integration of the beautiful trees on this wooded lot too!

Our combination project in Lago Vista, TX, turns up the heat with outdoor living possibilities!

Lago Vista TX patio cover

This covered patio space was the first phase of the addition.

Archadeck of Austin recently completed the final stage of this dual-phased outdoor living combination project in Lago Vista, TX. The completed masterpiece includes a patio cover which serves as an outdoor living room for these homeowners complete with a custom natural stone fireplace and hearth. Within the covered patio we also created a well-stocked outdoor kitchen which houses an egg smoker, grill and refrigerator among other amenities.

Just a stones throw away from the covered patio is the pergola-style protected shade structure designed to house the family’s beloved smoker that has been handed down generation to generation. The area includes an integrated park-bench inspired seating wall perfect for teaching the subtle innuendos of perfecting the art of smoking meats. The addition of the separate smoker space came about after the homeowner moved the existing perimeter fence out to accommodate the anticipated design in 2014.

Completed project in Lago Vista, TX.

This image shows both phases of the addition completed.

Although, outdoor food preparation and outdoor dining is high on the homeowners list of favorite things, they also have a soft spot for natural and native materials. This is evident throughout the space in their choice of materials. Archadeck of Austin perfected the design of both outdoor living additions to compliment the rustic wood used in conjunction with natural stone.

Lago Vista patio cover with outdoor fireplace and kitchen

The materials used within the patio cover consists of a tongue and groove cedar ceiling with posts and beams, including engineered beams, wrapped in cedar and stone. The spacious fireplace within the space is crafted from a combination of sandstone, limestone and Leuders stone. In the outdoor kitchen area we continued the use of Leuders stone and topped the kitchen area off with a beautiful natural granite countertop.

Lago Vista pergola style covered space

We continued the materials used in the covered patio, (phase one of the project), into the pergola-style covered space designed for the homeowner’s smoker. Here, we also used cedar and natural stone throughout.

The finished outdoor living combination is a raving success with these Lago Vista homeowners. They now have a backyard retreat that is overflowing with possibilities. An Austin screened porch will keep the mosquitoes away and enable you to enjoy outdoor living bug free

Austin screened porches

Screen porches give you the pleasures of the outdoors without truly being outdoors.

We cannot ignore the mosquito problems facing Texas this season. This year has been the worst on record for West Nile virus cases on record for Texas. Mosquitoes have frightened us off our patios and decks and made us retreat indoors for fear of contracting West Nile Virus. I am certain many outdoor entertaining endeavors have been put on hold, and many barbecues cut short because of the mosquito. Archadeck of Austin has the perfect cure for your outdoor living mosquito induced blues; a screened porch addition to enhance your home and other outdoor living structures.

Austin screen porches

This combination gives these Austin homeowners the best of both worlds, a deck with a screened porch to escape the mosquitoes and keep the outdoor living rolling.

According to a recent article by The Huffington Post Texas has recorded at least 510 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile, considered the most serious form of the illness because it affects the nervous system, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.  Having a screened porch to escape from the dangers of mosquitoes will not only enable you to continue to enjoy Texas outdoor living, but it will aid in reducing your risk of coming into contact with a mosquito that could be carrying West Nile Virus.

Screened porches give you the freedom and beauty of outdoor living without having to deal with the threat of bothersome insects, including mosquitoes. I guess you could call the screen porch another method of mosquito prevention because the presence of screen puts a barrier between you and the hungry bugs. Screen porches also provide protection from inclement weather such as wind, and rain.

Austin covered patio, deck and pergola

A covered patio, deck and pergola may fit the bill for your backyard.

We have compiled a list of the top 10 ways to create that outdoor oasis you have been dreaming of. This list will help provide ideas and insight into how you can make your outdoor oasis a reality.

Top 10 ways to create an outdoor oasis

Circular spa with natural privacy barrier

This Circular spa with natural privacy barrier has clean lines and delivers a contemporary feel to the space.

1) Pick you own personal style – create a backyard that flows with style. Create everything from formal by using columns and classic lines, to more modern by using curvilinear edges on your patio or deck edge, sticking to monochromatic color palettes and even introducing metal into the mix. If you can’t decide on just one style, then you can use a combination of well-chosen elements for an eclectic unique look.

2) Embrace textures – this maybe the most crucial design element that is often overlooked when building an outdoor living structure. By mixing wood, composite, stone and other hardscape materials together within your design, you create a feast for the senses.  Combining a hardwood  deck in combination with a flagstone patio will leave you with a space that begs to be lingered in. On a simpler note, even adding a pergola of rough-hewn cedar in conjunction with a hardscape feature will provide the same stunning contrast.

3) Be creative – outdoor living design is not black and white. There are no set rules, so go ahead and think outside the box. Employ the use of unexpected design opportunities to add visual interest. From adding a seating wall around your fire pit to placing deck lighting in an unusual spot to create ambiance, these details make the difference. A little creativity goes a long way.

Flagstone patio with fire pit, bench retaining wall and adjoining deck

This Flagstone patio with fire pit, bench retaining wall and adjoining deck shows how mixing textures can produce a lovely outcome.

4) Work with what you have – take a good look at your backyard and cultivate your outdoor living space with ingenuity. Mature trees, a spectacular view, or the slope of your yard can all be used to your advantage to get the most function and enjoyment out of your outdoor structure design.

5) Live outdoors and still have privacy– by designing your backyard with intimacy in mind; you can still have a highly functional outdoor space that offers privacy. Retaining walls and privacy walls are a great asset to your space and add a way to keep prying eyes away. This can also be achieved through landscaping methods, such as borders that can add color and lush foliage to your space too.

6) Choose your function – in order to get the most from your space, it is important to decide what you want the primary use of your space to be. Entertaining, cooking and dining, relaxing and even a need for a shaded area are viable reasons to choose one structure over another. If you intend to use your space for multiple functions then a design that includes multiple outdoor areas that offers separate designated functions may be your best choice.

Reading nook on Tigerwood multi-level deck at canopy level

This Reading nook on Tigerwood multi-level deck at canopy level provides a place for intimacy and to spend quiet moments.

7) Borrow upon the elements of nature – the 5 elements of nature are water, metal, earth, wood and fire. By using one or more of these elements in your outdoor space you will create an atmosphere that blends with your backyard. An outdoor fireplace or fire pit adds an intoxicating feel to any outdoor design. The flame, the sound and the warmth bring out some primitive instinct that makes us want to be near it. Water plays on our senses in much the same manner. By adding a water feature such as a rock waterfall into your outdoor space, you will hear the soothing sounds of moving water on a regular basis which relax and renew.

8) Decide the amount of maintenance your material choices will require– many times homeowners convey their wishes to use certain materials without realizing the amount of maintenance their structure will require. For example an Ipe  or Tigerwood deck requires annual maintenance, and sometimes more frequent in certain climates, to keep the wood looking new. In order to maintain your structure to get optimum results, it is important to decide the amount of time you are willing to put forth to maintain your investment. Many of the materials we have available require little or no maintenance and will remain looking new for many years to come.

9) Create an outdoor room – screen porches, covered patios and 3 season rooms can now be treated as an outdoor room with all the functionality and creature comforts that an interior living room can provide. Outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, ceiling fans, outdoor televisions, recessed lighting and plenty of electrical outlets are some of the many options available in outdoor structure design. The hardest part is deciding what you want to include in your space.

10) The details make the difference– an outdoor structure without decorative accents or outdoor furnishings that individualize it  is just an empty shell without character or personalization. By choosing furnishings that offer comfort and style to your space you will want to use it more often, and so will others. A comfy outdoor sofa with overstuffed cushions will create a place that you will never want to leave. The small touches that put the icing on the cake are the decorative touches like planters placed on your new deck stuffed with beautiful foliage and blooms, or maybe a reclaimed architectural piece placed as a focal point; these things are the glue that binds the perfect outdoor oasis together.

This covered patio in Austin is full of angles and it looks great from each one.

Austin TX gazebo style hip roof covered patios

This covered patio in Austin looks great from every angle.

When you think of a covered patio design often times your mind will automatically picture a square structure under a hip roof. The fact of the matter is that our covered patio designs don’t fall into a generic, cookie cutter style. Many times your ideal design and roof type can be something quite different and unique. When we design an outdoor structure area that is connected to, or in close proximity to you existing home we consider all the factors that keep the design original to your home’s materials and structural details.

Archadeck of Austin octagonal covered patios

The octagonal roofline of the patio cover adds as much beauty to the inside of the structure as it does the outside.

We recently completed a project in Austin that takes the covered patio to a whole new level. This covered patio includes an outdoor kitchen, an outdoor fireplace and abundant space all under an octagonal roof design. This type of roof is often used when building gazebos and when used as a covered patio roof delivers dramatic beauty evident from the backyard as you look up to the structure and on the interior on the structure as you look at the interior ceiling of the patio. We also used a king-truss which spans the width of the patio and serves as much for aesthetic appeal as for support. The result is stunning.

Austin Texas covered patios

The material choices for this covered patio in Austin, TX make this space a true gem of dazzling design.

Not only does this covered patio feature a unique roofline, it is also packed with every luxurious amenity that you can get in a covered patio design. We detailed the extensive  use of high-quality materials in our last post by Archadeck of Austin, the materials combined with the space this area offers the homeowners takes an otherwise vacant space and creates the feel of an outdoor family room. The brick and white limestone fireplace expanses plenty of room for comfortable outdoor furnishings to surround it so this family can curl up by the fire any day of the week. Above the fireplaces’ mantel we pre-wired the conduit through the fireplace so no wiring is visible to the naked eye for the homeowners to mount their flat-screen TV. The large gourmet outdoor kitchen gives them the freedom to leave their indoor kitchen any time they like and prepare and dine together outside on their new covered patio. We included plenty of lighting and ceiling fans in the design to make sure no creature comfort was left behind. The space also offers endless entertaining possibilities because of the amenities and spacious square footage contained under roof.

This image shows all the elements working together; the stucco skirting, brick, limestone and even the custom iron rail.

From the backyard the covered patio is a design masterpiece, from the custom iron staircase that spills gracefully into the beautifully landscaped backyard to the stucco finished skirting used around the base of the covered patio to give it a finished look that ties it into the existing home perfectly. The image that comes to mind when I see the completed project is a photographer searching for the “best angle” to photograph a shot of his subject. This covered patio is full of angles and it looks beautiful from every one of them. This space delivers everything you would want in a covered patio design; harmony, functionality, cohesive tie-in to the existing home and it also increases the value of the existing home with the added outdoor living space.

The materials make the difference in this covered patio addition in Austin, TX

Austin Texas covered patios

The material choices for this covered patio in Austin, TX make this space a true gem of dazzling design.

Austin TX gazebo style hip roof covered patiosAt first glance, when you look at this recently completed addition in Austin, TX  you will assume it to be a typical covered patio under a roof that mimics the look of a large gazebo, but indeed it is so much more than that. At closer inspection you will see the covered patio has all the amenities that make an outdoor structure great. The space contains an outdoor kitchen, abundant dining and seating space and an outdoor fireplace. The materials used in this construction are some of the finest used in outdoor structure designs.

Austin outdoor fireplace builder

A limestone decorative arched key and custom mantel grace the facade of the patio’s outdoor fireplace.

On the outdoor fireplace we used a combination of brick that was chosen to match the brick used on the existing home and stunning white limestone. We used the limestone on the hearth and firebox that surround the fireplace and also added a decorative key made of limestone into the area right above the hearth. We also carried the use of limestone into the outdoor kitchen area where we used it to finish out the area on the side of the bar. Limestone is a solid choice for use in outdoor structures such as these, not only for its beauty but also for its density. Limestone is a dense sedimentary rock that is very hard. On this project we used white limestone, but limestone is available in a wide range of colors such as vanilla, beige, tan and darker hues like taupe and dark wood tones. Using limestone can also help bridge the gap between two separate design styles. Limestone is a transitional material and adding it in small touches or in a wide spectrum can help you mix two styles such as traditional and modern more easily.

Austin Limestone outdoor kitchens

We combined Limestone and granite counter tops to the outdoor kitchen to make the area unforgettable.

Austin outdoor fireplace expertsAlong with using limestone around the side of the bar/serving area in the patio cover’s outdoor kitchen area, we also brought in granite for the counter-tops in a complimentary neutral color. Granite is another natural stone. Granite is quarried from natural granite beds in large deposits beneath the earth’s surface. It comes in a wide arrange of hues from pink to black and is perfect for use in kitchens because of its resistant to man-made mishaps that are common in a kitchen setting. Granite is alkali and acid resistant, boiling water, oils, and wines will not affect the granite and granite is easy to clean. The material also offers resiliency to cuts and scratches as well.

The floor of the patio cover is finished in beautiful 12 x 12 ceramic tiles which carry the theme of natural stone influence used in the entire design of the space. Tile is easy to clean and will withstand the test of time better than wood, and it also stays cooler in the warm Texas weather and helps keep the space cooler by a few degrees. The use of stone, combined with the ceiling fans we installed in the covered patio will equal more enjoyment on the patio on those sultry days.Austin custom iron railings

As you descend off of the covered patio into the beautifully landscaped backyard you will also notice the clever use of high-quality composite decking on the steps. This will make for easy upkeep and low-maintenance in keeping this stairway looking like new for many years to come. We paired the rich hues used in the steps alongside a custom iron railing for added elegance.

The entire completed project exudes an elegance that ties in all the uses of various materials into an eclectic style. The Austin homeowners are ecstatic about all the outdoor living opportunities their space has opened up for them. They view the covered patio as an extension of living space, and look forward to enjoying all it has to offer in the years to come.

What really goes into building a flagstone patio?

Austin flagstone patio with red rocking chairs

Austin flagstone patio in all it’s splendor.

Flagstone patio in cedar park with built-in benches

Flagstone patio in cedar park with built-in benches

Patios are very popular here in the Austin area and flagstone patios in particular are one of the most requested type of patios among our customers. The rustic elegance they provide compliments our Texas landscape and unique home designs. Installing a flagstone patio requires a lot more steps than it may seem.

Austin flagstone bar outdoor kitchen

The first steps begin once the dimensions are determined during our pre-construction meeting with the homeowners. Following this important meeting  we then have the concrete poured to form up the shape of the patio. Sometimes the homeowner first needs to contact their sprinkler system company and have them re-locate any sprinkler heads that are in the area of the intended patio, if not Archadeck of Austin will cap off the heads. If we are building a “full-on” patio next to a house that is built on a slab our professional concrete contractor will also install rebar every two feet to connect the foundation of the patio to the foundation of the house. This extra step ensures a stable patio foundation. Once this step is completed we then pour the perimeter of the patio. We pour this 1ft. by 1ft. around what will become the perimeter footing, we also add rebar to this area as well for an added measure of strength. Most other companies just don’t take this step; we however feel it very important for the strength and life of your patio.

Flagstone patio with steps and a pergola privacy wall

Depending on the slope of your yard, we may install a fascia. A fascia involves the underpinning which is concrete paint that is trimmed so it doesn’t convey a rough vertical surface. We will then use vertical stones around your step areas. Typically this is not done around the entire perimeter because over time it can flake and break off so we do something that will last over a long period of time.

On the top of the poured patio base we add a 4″ deep cap and pour an additional 4″ of concrete strengthened with wire mesh. Depending on the size of your patio, we may also install man-made, control and expansion joints every 10-12′ depending on the width. Once those layers of concrete properly cure, the flagstone will then be delivered by the stone company so our expert masons can lay out the flagstone in a mosaic pattern. Once they are laid out and everything is concise, we then put in the mortar that was chosen by the homeowner. One thing we are proud of is the tight mortar joints we do so well, this gives you a flagstone patio that looks like stone when you look at and not all mortar. After all, our customers are paying for stone, not mortar. After the mortar is done, the next step is to apply a sealer. The sealer is undetectable to the appearance of the patio, but it keeps moisture from penetrating the stone and also keeps mold and mildew out. The sealer also gives the finished patio a cleaner look. After applying the sealer you shouldn’t have to do any further maintenance for 5-10 years.

This flagstone patio in Steiner Ranch incorporates a water feature that can also be used as a fire pit

When the stone selections are made we generally meet our customer at the stone shop to help them with their selection and any questions or concerns they may have about a particular stone. There are actually 10-14 various types of flagstone to choose from. The most popular flagstone choices are Oklahoma, Arizona and Mexico. All the most widely used flagstones come from Oklahoma. Sometimes when we use flagstone we will incorporate beautiful and useful features such as stone benches or even a stone kitchen island if your patio incorporates an outdoor kitchen.

Flagstone patios are not only gorgeous, they are a solid material choice for your patio because with a stained concrete or concrete patio when it cracks, and it is not a question of if it cracks, but a question of when, you will have to live with it. When you use flagstone and the concrete underneath cracks you may get a little separation of mortar joints over time but you won’t see a line in the stone. Making sure your flagstone is installed by a licensed professional ensures the beauty and enjoyment of your patio is treasured for many years to come.

Integrating nature into your Austin outdoor living area

Austin Zen deck with integrated trees

Archadeck of Austin cares about the natural landscape and enjoys working with existing trees within the area where you may be considering adding a deck or other outdoor living structure. We like to design your outdoor structure to fit your existing trees instead of clearing the area. Not only does this keep the beauty of your landscape intact, it makes for an interesting design feature of your deck.

Austin deck with integrated trees

One example of the way we make every effort to integrate any existing trees of worth into your outdoor living design is a stunning Tigerwood deck flanked by double flagstone patios on either side that we completed in the Oak Hill community in South Austin. The area where the deck and double patio lies contains some majestic, mature conifers that we were able to incorporate into the layout and design of the structures to preserve the beauty of the landscape and not harm the trees.

Tree integrated into Austin TX deck

The foundation of any good outdoor structure design begins with working with the landscape when possible. Many builders set off on their projects by initially “clearing off” the entire area where an outdoor structure is to be built. We like to look at all the individual characteristics of  each landscape, as well as the home, when we design outdoor structures. Mature trees can take years, even decades to reach a size where they provide optimal shade in a homeowners backyard. With this in mind, combined with the trees’ beauty, why would clearing off the area of trees be the automatic choice or the right choice?

Austin hot tub deck with integrated trees

Leaving the tree(s), and working the design around the tree is sometimes the glue that holds the entire design together. It adds visual interest, adds shade without having to use an awning or other protective covering, and it opens the door to so many stunning possibilities. One way we make use of an integrated tree is to add built-in bench seating around the tree. This outcome is similar to the style of a French Tete-a-Tete chair or bench from a by-gone area. It provides an intimate place to strike up a conversation and adds much-needed seating when entertaining outdoors.

We specialize in creating an outdoor space that is unique. Archadeck of Austin works with architectural challenges to deliver a stunning L-shaped covered patio

Austin custom water feature concrete patio outdoor kitchen

The finished patio includes an outdoor kitchen and soothing water feature

These Cedar Park, TX homeowners contacted us to construct a covered patio for their two-story home. The house is flat on the backside with lots of windows and their landscape architect had already completed some significant rounded rear patios that we were to incorporate into the design. The project was not without its challenges, but we were able to come up with the perfect complement to the existing home and structures.

We initially experienced some issues with the covered patio because the home’s upper windows and large nearby tree were constricting to the allowable height of the area where the covered patio was to be placed. The homeowners wanted a closed wall where a TV could be mounted as well as a full option outdoor kitchen and a dining room area. We were at odds with the interaction of the room facilitated with the height limitations, the existing bay window over the kitchen and the roof pitch.

Covered patio Austin with outdoor kitchen

Design rendering prepared by Archadeck of Austin prior to construction

before-from-backyard

Picture from backyard before we began the transformation

We came up with a design that includes a lower and shallower roof pitch to compensate for the 2nd story windows and make the design cohesive.  We also extended the area further on the right than the left, so the patio would still fit the guidelines of the rounded patio floors already constructed.  We added structural supports in prime locations and used larger than normal beams to accommodate the extended span. To make the two roofs we built work together we used a cathedral ceiling on one side and a flat ceiling on the other.

flagstone bar top round

The unique round, flagstone bar top is a real show-stopper.

The finished project includes a gorgeous stone bar which was designed to coordinate with the circular lines and add enough space so you can view the TV from any angle. The prime location of the bar area allows flow from the outdoor kitchen, and dining areas as well as access to the TV. In many cases it is difficult to decide where the bar stools should be placed in projects like this because you want a significant enough area to take in all the function and beauty of the entire structure and also allow for proper furniture placement and “pull-out” room as well. We used similar materials to finish the patio that were conducive to the integrity of the existing home. We used complimentary stone on the front of the kitchen and integrated unique stone and tile inserts into the counter tops. The outdoor kitchen includes a propane grill and side burner, refrigerator, storage and plenty of electrical outlets. The finished project created an outdoor oasis that adds value to the home and the homeowners lifestyle.

An outdoor oasis in Austin that is seamless in design and function

Austin covered pool-side cabana

This Austin covered pool-side cabana is a true backyard paradise.

A backyard can hold the key to the ultimate outdoor living enjoyment. A backyard begs to be improved upon, much like an artist’s canvas serves as a backdrop for creativity and visualization. These Austin homeowners took their backyard to a new level by adding a cabana-style covered patio with endless amenities.

When we originally met with these Austin, TX homeowners they had recently installed a new pool and had the area adjacent to the pool poured to accommodate a 15 x 15 pavilion. The homeowners had meticulously collected pictures of what they had in mind, but most of the photos were out of scale. We spoke with them about what aspects of the pavilion where the most important and transferred those into the custom design we prepared for them. They already had a nice grill but also wanted an outdoor fireplace, outdoor bar sitting area,  outdoor kitchen with refrigerator, ice maker and sink. They also wanted a place to hang a big screen TV to enjoy within the cabana as well. The dilemma was to fit all the elements they wanted into the 15 x 15 design, which couldn’t fit within the space allotted. We strongly urged them to allow pushing the design out two more feet on two of the sides, which would incur the design components to cover all the newly extended concrete.

Column and kitchen details in covered patio, Austin

Column and kitchen details in covered patio

The clients had a stunning brick home that also had an existing wood deck, their pool had a decorative stone back and canterra beams. We designed the structure support with that part of the pool in mind and used cedar to pull the whole thing together. The home, the existing outdoor designs, and the new covered patio blended effortlessly as if they had all been built together. Since the home is located in a weather zone and receives a lot of hail, the roof was also upgraded with steel shingles and a crushed stone application so it looks like clay shingles and is durable and strong.

The interior of the cabana boasts custom cypress cabinets which are stair stepped 12″ and 18″. Ingenious design was used to accommodate the TV which required consideration of the placement of the TV as well as the DVD player and cable box, and all the accoutrements that surround the TV.  Our cabinet builder customized the TV cabinet and made it deeper to hold all the electronics. We also installed recessed cans for additional lighting in the evening within the covered patio. The existing canterra column lights also aided in night-time illumination. For the bar/serving area we constructed a 6′ bar that can be accessed from either side. This area provides an easily integrated area into the design without becoming a full-blown area to take up too much space. We even installed stucco walls to aid in creating privacy from the neighbors that also hides the children’s playground.  Each facet of this cabana’s design allows for flow and easy accessibility.

Austin Cabana interiors

Entering the interior of this pavilion can make every day feel like a weekend.

The homeowners are ecstatic with the covered patio design. It has added in their outdoor, and living enjoyment as a whole. Now the family is directed outside to enjoy the area throughout the week instead of just on the weekends. It is the perfect place to have dinner, family movie night, and sleepovers for the kids. They like to spend their time in the covered patio in the evening as a family watching movies or just enjoying each others company by the outdoor fireplace.

This covered patio is the epitome of an outdoor oasis. This structure is the perfect place for this family to make memories that will last a lifetime, and have a lot of fun in the process! A true work of art in the realm of outdoor living structures.

These include refrigeration, sinks, food preparation areas, warming drawers, microwave, smokers, and grills. You name it, we can include it into the design of your patio cover. If you are looking for the perfect place to watch the game, and prepare a feast for your guests all while watching the kids play, the covered patio is an all-around best outdoor structure. An outdoor living room with mother nature as the backdrop.

Austin screened porches

Screen porches give you the pleasures of the outdoors without truly being outdoors.

The screen porch

The screened porch is another way to utilize all the amenities of an outdoor living room, minus the insects. Here in Texas, the warm temperatures will give you the benefit of year-round enjoyment of your screen porch.  We also refer to these as sun porches and they make a perfect spot to relax and rewind. The beauty of a screened porch is that you get the pleasure of the outdoors without actually being outdoors. A screen porch offers an extension of outdoor as well as  indoor living space.

Multi-structure outdoors  living areas

We are starting to see a trend in multi-structure outdoor living areas. These are outdoor living areas that contain the works. These can include open patios, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and decks all in one. This offers homeowners the ultimate in luxury and convenience, not to mention adding to your home’s value. Our multi-structure designs are planned to compliment each structure as it flows together. Instead of getting an outdoor room, you are actually getting an outdoor paradise where each outdoor room or area caters to a specific function but also harmonizes with the other elements within the entire design. Imagine having an area right outside your back door where you can dine, cook, read a book, roast marshmallows, listen to the crackle of the fire on those cool Texas nights,  entertain, or just enjoy the fresh air.

Archadeck of Austin reaps multiple design awards at annual event

Archadeck of Austin awardsEach year a nationwide group of Archadeck offices come together to share their best practices, ideas, new products and to review outstanding leadership in design. This year, like others, the locally owned and operated Austin location performed very well. We are very proud to have scooped up on four of twelve design awards, plus a distinguished Customer Satisfaction Award which reconfirmed Austin’s place as the 2nd best producing Archadeck location in North America.

Archadeck of Austin prides itself in being “all about design and customer experience”. Here are some of the ‘Best of Show’.

Decks

Austin won second place for this project outside the Craig O’s restaurant in Lakeway, TX. This deck uses TimberTech Earthwoods Evolutions composite decking in walnut designed in quadrants of diagonal board placement converging to the center. The deck is designed for 100 lb/sf commercial loads and has  a massive concrete footing hidden behind an attractive cedar skirt. A powder coated Fortress railing system surrounds the deck and is capped in the same composite. Stairs descend down to the parking lot and play area. Patrons will enjoy many meals overlooking the serene hills East of Lakeway atop this deck.

If you are curious, the following deck from outside Boston won 1st place…

Ft. Worth poolside cabana

Our friends at Archadeck of Ft. Worth placed 1st for this pool-side cabana.

Porch Enclosures

First place went to our friends at Archadeck of Ft. Worth for a fabulous pool-side cabana. The Austin entry took third place, under some tight competition, with our pool-side cabana constructed in Round Rock, TX. Both of these projects are indicative of a growing trend to move the living room outside complete with integrated kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, television; everything you need to entertain outdoors.

The Austin hardscape project is located in the Steiner Ranch community of Austin and includes a covered tile patio up top for visiting, lunch or even coffee. Riverplace combination outdoor structure by Archadeck of Austin

Our combination outdoor structure in Riverplace stole the spotlight.

Combination Award

This new award category reflects the fact that great projects are rarely one-dimensional. Every year the very best projects combine multiple elements into a cohesive design that may include a shade structure, decking. masonry, and other elements to provide the homeowners with a complete backyard with multiple uses and gain the maximum added value to their home. We are excited that our project constructed in Riverplace took the spotlight for #1. The project was designed by our own Mark Mommsen, whom was also the winner of #1 design representative. The project brings together a very unique stand-alone roof structure with Permacast columns which are mounted on an elevated Tigerwood deck beside the pool and outdoor fireplace with stone benches on the opposite side of the pool. All this is designed to face the canyon/green belt and golf course located behind the residence.

Customer Sat Award 2-16-2012

Archadeck of Austin receives the Customer Satisfaction Award, among others.

If the customer isn’t happy, nobody’s happy!

As the owner of Archadeck of Austin, I’m very pleased to say we won the coveted Customer Satisfaction Award. To win this award there can be no, and I mean ‘zero’ negative responses in post-construction surveys. Last year we built 133 residential projects. We are not perfect and are always improving, but to have absolutely no negative responses is a testament to our desire for excellence in customer service. We were also recently added to the Angie’s List Honor Roll and we strongly encourage people to submit reviews to Angie’s list.

A fire pit can be used for a lot more than just fires.

Chilly nights are perfect for gathering around the fire with the ones you love. Whether entertaining friends or just having a family night around the fire making s’mores and memories, a fire pit is the perfect place to gather.

Austin fire pit

Fire pits add warmth and ambiance to any setting. They radiate a great deal more heat than an outdoor fireplace because the heat can radiate out in multiple directions. October through April in the Texas area, is the time frame you want to add a heated spot to your outdoor get together. The ambiance factor can be used year round by using a low fire in the fire pit for ambiance and  it is perfect for roasting those marshmallows. A fire pit is also considerably cheaper to build than a fireplace. In most cases the cost can be up to 75% less than a fireplace. There are numerous design options and materials to choose from when considering the addition of a fire pit. Fire pits can even be equipped with gas and use beautiful glowing glass fire rocks which come in different colors. You can even install a gas star in your fire pit, you guessed it, the flame comes out in a star pattern. With all the versatility and choices of fire pits you can capture the effect and glow of the outdoor fire without sacrificing your budget.

This fire pit built by Archadeck of Austin is a great example of all the beauty and versatility available when planning your fire pit. This fire pit is unique in it’s shape and function. Not only can this fire pit be used for fire, it also has the capability of doubling in the off-season months as a water feature or planter. Incredible versatility was integrated in the design by choosing a corner location for additional seating. This fire pit is also outfitted with a sconce light. If you don’t want to turn up the heat you can always turn up the mood with this gorgeous fire pit.

Fire pit seating area

The fire pit was built atop a stained and scored concrete patio which is all the rage right now. We recommend a broom finish, to avoid slippage and it also allows the stain to appear bolder, resembling a matte finish instead of a shiny finish. The stain color was created to complement the color of the stone used in this project. The cap was done in sandstone, which has lots of veining. On the base and walls we used two different types of flagstone. We used 25% Oklahoma taupe and 75% autumn blend. Autumn blend looks great with sandstone. We tied it all together with a scored ribbon of one color that goes all the way around, we always use a scored ribbon in this manner.

This particular job also entailed an outside bar with a granite cap. On the other end we built a beautiful 12’ bench with an arch and built-in planter. This job came together like beautiful pieces of a puzzle. One feature flowed effortlessly into another to create ease of enjoyment and ambiance. Give Archadeck of Austin a call to plan and build your next outdoor structure. We can create an outdoor oasis in your backyard too.
