One of our most recent projects takes us to Leander, TX, where our senior designer, Jim Schallon, has created a stunning low-maintenance dream deck for homeowners in the new Travisso neighborhood. Jim’s background in outdoor living space design and building, and all facets of exterior residential building spans more than 30 years. He is a huge asset to our team and his talent shines through on each of his stunning projects!
The deck is built of AZEK decking in Hazelwood and the trim is built using Morado, both from AZEK’s Arbor Collection. The railing is beautiful black gloss Fortress iron railing which compliments and contrasts the neutral tones of the decking perfectly. The skirting on the perimeter of the deck was completed in Hardie board and painted to match the colors of the existing home. We took the design a step further by adding concrete pads at the base of the stairs to avoid a slippery surface and to reduce the debris that is tracked onto the deck from the backyard. The homeowners’ plan to install a retractable sunscreen to shade the area from the mid-afternoon sun.

This is exactly what these Austin, TX, homeowner’s got when they hired Archadeck of Austin to design and build their elevated deck and porch.
This spacious outdoor living space consists of an elevated, 2nd story low-maintenance deck and covered porch area with all the trimmings! The deck was built using Fiberon Horizons decking in Tudor Brown. Horizon decking is capped (or covered) on all four sides with a patent-pending PermaTech® surface material. Four-side capping increases durability, enhances stain and fade resistance, and ensures a more polished appearance all around. Plus, Horizon decking features two different wood grain patterns on the top and bottom to add more character to your deck design with less on-the-job waste. In addition, Fiberon decking requires no sanding, staining or sealing , ever. This means less worry over maintenance and more time to enjoy the finer things in life!
The beautiful deck is accented with custom-designed and constructed horizontal tubular railing that has been powder-coated black. Atop the railing, and expanding the entire perimeter of the space, Archadeck of Austin installed a double composite cap offset within with a super strong fabricated steel plate to prevent climbing on the railing. In addition to the safety factor, the double cap also serves as a luxurious bar area to use as a drink ledge measuring out to 11″, and is even large enough, standing at 42″, to pull up a bar stool and double as a impromptu spot for dining, conversation or enjoying a beverage while taking in breathtaking views of Austin proper.
We took the abundance of custom features a step further by designing and building integrated bistro-style seating out of the same composite used on the deck around the cedar posts of the covered porch portion of the space. We even designed a built-in bench for additional seating when entertaining friends and family. Last cut certainly not least, this outdoor living space picks up where other designs leave as an afterthought — evening enjoyment! The entire space is loaded with romantic LED outdoor lighting to aid in utilizing the space to its fullest potential in the evening, and creating ambiance.

One example of the way we make every effort to integrate any existing trees of worth into your outdoor living design is a stunning Tigerwood deck flanked by double flagstone patios on either side that we completed in the Oak Hill community in South Austin. The foundation of any good outdoor structure design begins with working with the landscape when possible. Many builders set off on their projects by initially “clearing off” the entire area where an outdoor structure is to be built. We like to look at all the individual characteristics of each landscape, as well as the home, when we design outdoor structures. Mature trees can take years, even decades to reach a size where they provide optimal shade in a homeowners backyard. With this in mind, combined with the trees’ beauty, why would clearing off the area of trees be the automatic choice or the right choice?
Leaving the tree(s), and working the design around the tree is sometimes the glue that holds the entire design together. Archadeck of Austin reaps multiple design awards at annual event
Each year a nationwide group of Archadeck offices come together to share their best practices, ideas, new products and to review outstanding leadership in design. This year, like others, the locally owned and operated Austin location performed very well. We are very proud to have scooped up on four of twelve design awards, plus a distinguished Customer Satisfaction Award which reconfirmed Austin’s place as the 2nd best producing Archadeck location in North America.

Decks
Austin won second place for this project outside the Craig O’s restaurant in Lakeway, TX. This deck uses TimberTech Earthwoods Evolutions composite decking in walnut designed in quadrants of diagonal board placement converging to the center. The deck is designed for 100 lb/sf commercial loads and has a massive concrete footing hidden behind an attractive cedar skirt. A powder coated Fortress railing system surrounds the deck and is capped in the same composite. Stairs descend down to the parking lot and play area. Patrons will enjoy many meals overlooking the serene hills East of Lakeway atop this deck.

First place went to our friends at Archadeck of Ft. Worth for a fabulous pool-side cabana. The Austin entry took third place, under some tight competition, with our pool-side cabana constructed in Round Rock, TX. Both of these projects are indicative of a growing trend to move the living room outside complete with integrated kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, television; everything you need to entertain outdoors.

Demonstrating the diversity of Archadeck’s designs, the Austin hardscape project took the 3rd place award vs. a really unique and innovative project outside Denver that took home 1st place. The Austin hardscape project is located in the Steiner Ranch community of Austin and includes a covered tile patio up top for visiting, lunch or even coffee. The project includes stone steps that lead down to a stained concrete lower patio perfect for every facet of entertaining. The project also includes integrated lighting so it looks spectacular day and night.

Combination Award
This new award category reflects the fact that great projects are rarely one-dimensional. Every year the very best projects combine multiple elements into a cohesive design that may include a shade structure, decking. masonry, and other elements to provide the homeowners with a complete backyard with multiple uses and gain the maximum added value to their home. We are excited that our project constructed in Riverplace took the spotlight for #1. The project was designed by our own Mark Mommsen, whom was also the winner of #1 design representative. The project brings together a very unique stand-alone roof structure with Permacast columns which are mounted on an elevated Tigerwood deck beside the pool and outdoor fireplace with stone benches on the opposite side of the pool. All this is designed to face the canyon/green belt and golf course located behind the residence.

When choosing a hardscape for your Austin outdoor structure stone is a natural
Among the preference of materials used to construct our Austin area homeowners hardscape endeavors, the top choice is undoubtedly natural stone. Natural stone comes in a myriad of colors, textures and variances in undulation, or waves and bends present in natural stone. Natural stone is derived from a multitude of locations within our earth, and with any material that is derived from nature and the earth, no two pieces of stone are exactly alike. The differences and variations present in natural stone only add to its charm and part of what makes it so popular among the many materials available to create a truly unique hardscape outdoor structure.

Our signature item is the flagstone patio. Whether they are built-in unison with a decks, pergolas or one of the other stunning outdoor structures we build for homeowners here in the Austin area, the added essence of flagstone makes the entire project breathtaking. Austin is hill country which not only yields varying grades and steep drop offs which often includes natural stone, but natural stone used as a building material is common because of its natural beauty and the way it complements the natural surroundings and backdrops of Austin’s hill country. Flagstone is quarried from the ground and therefore will not yield a completely even surface. Flagstone patios are set on either concrete or mortar beds. The concrete base is referred to as a 1″ stone, and the mortar base is a 2″ stone. These terms are commonly used but the thickness of the stone itself can vary from 3/4″ to 3″. There can and will be movement on flagstone which is set on a base which is not concrete. Maintaining your flagstone patio, or other outdoor structure involves cleaning, sweeping or pressure washing on a low PSI and a fan tip is also recommended. Our flagstone patios our sealed with a “matte” finish penetrating sealer and are not visible to the naked eye that they are being absorbed. The seal will last from 6-12 months. After the initial sealing, the patio may be resealed again at your discretion. If you are placing a BBQ pit or grill atop your flagstone patio be careful not to let grease or drippings on the surface of the flagstone for they can stain the stone and become permanent.

Flagstone is not the only natural stone that is coveted among Austin homeowners for its beauty and unique characteristics. We also use sandstone in many of our projects. Sandstone is created when sand and an alkaline settling is formed under pressure and joined at the uppermost surface of the earth. Slate as well is a rich, deeply undulated natural stone that is popular in building outdoor hardscape structures. Slate and sandstone are very similar in the manner formation of the stone itself occurs. Slate is formed when wide ranges of minerals are compressed in layers near the earths’ surface over time. Slate is however prone to what is called “cleft plane spalling” which is a process where layers separate from the main stone body. Combined with the soft character of slate, these layers can be separated by walking on the surface, dropping or moving items over the surface or an excessive presence of moisture. Due to its’ soft nature, slate is also prone to scratching.
Austin flagstone patio
Running only second to flagstones popularity here in the Austin area is Leuders stone, also known as limestone. Limestone is formed when sea beds dry up in layers over time which results in the decay of aquatic organisms. This sedimentation process over time and intense pressure yields limestone. Limestone is basically calcium carbonate which is a pure form of a very soft alkali. Not unlike the other natural stones we have listed, limestone also can be stained or damaged by outside forces. When exposed to acidic properties which are present in wines, sodas, coffees and other beverages it can result in a condition referred to as an “etch mark” which needs to be polished to be removed. Repeated acid or high moisture attack can result in permanent and irreversible stone damage and color change. This stone class can scratch easily under normal wear. Despite the fragile nature limestone has under certain circumstances, it is one of the most beautiful stones we use and as long as it is properly sealed and taken care of can prove to provide years of outdoor enjoyment.

All of these types of stone are excellent choices for masonry projects. They can all be sealed to help prevent staining. These stone make ups are available in a chopped block, patio stone or cap stone. Combining various styles can add more texture and depth to a project. All are extremely durable and will outlast us all as we know since it has already existed for thousands of years. Within these stone types there are an extremely large number of colors and hues. So when choosing your hardscape material for your patio or other outdoor structure, natural stone is a natural indeed.

The covered patio was designed in the spot where we removed an old sunroom. After removing the sunroom we extended the roof to accommodate the new covered patio. The patio floor is finished with stain and seal concrete to compliment the gorgeous custom stonework that was used throughout the entire structure. Some of the key areas where we used Leuders stone include the outdoor kitchen, the flower bed surround, the stone benches as well as the bench toppers and of course the mesmerizing multi-tiered outdoor fireplace. Within the interior of the patio cover we used a tongue and groove cedar ceiling to add some rustic flair to compliment the natural characteristics that are evident in the usage of the stone and concrete. We also stripped and stained the homeowners existing deck in order to match the hues found within the covered patio. The use of colors, textures and design lines throughout the patio make it truly breathtaking. The talented homeowners also finished the interior of the patio in expert style, with well-appointed patio furnishings and well blended accessories that tie the whole project together perfectly.

The focal point within the porch cover is undoubtedly the elegant multi tiered custom stone fireplace. The homeowners took a unique approach to the popular practice of utilizing a TV above an outdoor fireplace. Many homeowners opt to construct a recessed perimeter to house their TV, such as a flat screen, for permanent placement. These Austin, TX homeowners did not wish to keep their TV above the outdoor fireplace permanently, so we designed the fireplace using multi-tiered custom stone ledges with a customized pull out shelf on the fireplace’s mantle that is outfitted with a cable and electrical outlets. This shelf makes it easy to place the TV on the outdoor fireplace whenever they wish, and when the TV is not in use, the shelf can be pushed in and hidden and no one is none the wiser. This feature is an example of this structural convenience that is built into every inch of this outdoor structure. Archadeck of Austin also made certain to add plenty of outlets into the columns used on the patio cover, to add more convenience as well.

The expert stone work on this structure was achieved using select Antique Leuder’s stone, which is an upgrade from limestone. The use of this stone can be seen in the bench toppers, the outdoor kitchen, the stone benches under the roof cover and many other areas throughout this outdoor oasis. To create an essence of ambiance, Archadeck of Austin made sure to include outdoor lighting throughout the patio cover. The creative placement of a large amount of low voltage lighting around the entire perimeter adds to the “feel” of relaxation and refuge. Low voltage lighting was placed strategically within the stone benches, surrounding the open area we built to showcase a water feature, and we added recessed LED lights in the existing decks as well.

Light my Fire?
There is more than one method to obtaining fire in your outdoor fireplace or fire pit. There is of course, the traditional wood-burning structure that we are all familiar with. When considering a wood burning structure the dimensions of the fireplace itself are important. The smallest capable wood burning fireplace can be built no smaller than 5×8 and has to be at least 2-3 feet deep in order to function properly.
Outdoor fire structures can also be lit by gas through a gas started system or full burning gas log kits. In either case the “draw” needs to be correct on a fireplace or fire pit, and this can only be achieved by having a professional outdoor fireplace contractor build the structure for you. Improper drawing on a structure such as this can be dangerous and cause a safety hazard, so the chimney itself has to be designed and constructed properly to achieve an appropriate draw.

Designs a’plenty
When considering the design mediums that outdoor fireplaces and fire pits can be built with, typically the wood burning structures are either masonry or stone. Archadeck of Austin uses a great deal of flagstone for our outdoor fireplace and fire pit designs, it looks the part and is a high quality stone that functions well with the fireplace itself. The main aspect when looking at material choices is that they are acceptable for use on a fire structure and that they hold up well under the conditions. Flagstone is strong, beautiful, and can take the heat well and will look gorgeous for many years to come.
Another design consideration is whether to embellish or add anything to the structure. Some homeowners add mantles which can serve as a focal point for your structure. We place the mantle 12″-18″ above so it is not flush with the grade therefore the heat can radiate at a similar level. Mantles provide more aesthetic appeal in form than in function and aren’t really used much. However, fireboxes are a useful addition to your structure. You don’t want the firebox area to be too large, but large enough to hold wood or other essentials. If you are thinking of integrating the firebox into the structure itself, it will have to comply to building codes and be built within certain dimensions.

A Delectable Deck Tempts the Palette for this Upcoming Lakeway City Restaurant.
Archadeck of Austin begins construction on this commercial deck in Lakeway City, TX.
Everybody knows that when you go out to dinner, the setting and mood of the restaurant are just as important as the cuisine. Fine dining should trigger all your senses – what you see, how it makes you feel, what you hear, and most importantly what aromas are wafting their way from the kitchen to your nose. Of course, your senses should reach their crescendo when you take your first bite of the dish you have ordered. But in order to make that crescendo really memorable, all your senses have to come into play. A well designed, and well-built restaurant can actually make the food taste better by the sights and views before your food ever reaches the table. Many restauranteurs consider setting the mood before you take that first bite as important as the food itself.

Setting the mood is the reason this upcoming, Lakeway City restaurant decided to hire us to construct a large commercial deck at their establishment. The deck is still under construction, but we wanted to share the news and the gorgeous views that will be visible atop this fantastic deck when completed. The deck faces the hills and overlooks a canyon, these breathtaking Hill Country Views will offer a wonderful blend of natural imagery to compliment your dining experience.
The restaurant will have an inside and outside dining area once completed. Archadeck of Austin is constructing a 1,000 square foot high-end composite deck with railing that will sit 12 feet off the ground. The deck is being built to commercial grade standards which are designed for a higher pound load of 100 pounds per square foot as this meets the load requirements when building a commercial grade deck. Load requirements are very important in terms of safety and keeping the deck hefty enough to withstand larger weight capacity than those you would need for a deck this size in a residential setting. Archadeck of Austin always puts safety first, and obeys all guidelines and standards set forth within the requirements and building codes in the location we are building our outdoor structures.

We always welcome the opportunity to be able to work hand in hand with a skilled architect. We welcome the opportunity to work with customers whose architect developed a plan for their outdoor living space. However, often, the homeowner will bring in the landscaping plan which was drawn up by their landscape architect and based on this Archadeck of Austin incorporates an outdoor living space to fit in with their landscaping. The dilemma with this is that it is best to design the outdoor structure first and then customize the landscaping to fit in with the structure’s style and dimensions as well as that of the existing home.
In the case of this homeowner, they came to us while they were still in process with another contractor that had left them frustrated because of the number of mistakes they were seeing. These homeowners brought their architect’s design to the table along with the confidence that we could turn this project into something they could be proud of.

When we received their architect’s design, we put it through our standards and structural warranty design process that Archadeck of Austin does with all it’s plans and also drew a set of plans that fit our criteria for loading and other structural aspects.
The structure Archadeck of Austin is building for these homeowners is a 1,000 square foot Tigerwood deck. It will have a roof over the dining area portion which is right off the homes master bedroom. The deck will also have a cooking area on the other end. There is a split level staircase. There will be a roof structure that will be over the dining area and a shade structure over the entire remainder of the deck. The shade structure is quite unique in that it uses a truss system of framing in order to maintain the size of the structure using minimal posts. The most unique feature of this deck is that when most people build a deck, you don’t want to see any framing that is visible, on this deck the details of the framing will be one of the main focal points of the structure. We are using large 8 x 8 beams, opposed to the usual 6 x 6 that are commonly used. The beams are made of Douglas Fir and all the framing is oversized to take on a personality of its own to accentuate the entire structure. The beams are kept from actually touching the ground by the addition of custom-made steel. The structure will use a bullwire railing system to maximize the view. The deck will have a beautiful non-obtrusive view of a canyon.

A front entrance transformation in Austin, TX that takes these homeowners to a cherished memory in their lives.
Once in a while Archadeck of Austin gets a front row seat on witnessing magic happen before our very eyes. This magic comes from an outdoor structure design that creates an emotional reaction with the customers.

As is the case with these homeowners in the Circle C Ranch community right here in Austin, TX. We created a design rendering of the front entrance to their home that stirred in them memories and emotions that make this structure unforgettable. The homeowners both had attended college at St. Edwards University of Austin. The design rendering we created for their home immediately took them back to the front entrance of St. Edwards, where as it turns out, was the very place the husband had proposed to his wife, on those very front steps. The homeowners immediately said “I do” and decided to go forth with the design Archadeck of Austin had created that reminded them of that special place, at that special time.

Their home, located in the Circle C Ranch community was a fairly large home. The original builder had done an average job on the entrance and the path leading up to entry was rather narrow, as were the stairs, and the front porch was railed with cedar. Archadeck of Austin was called in to open up the entrance with a new design that would add character and style to the home.

We went over the plan using a 3-dimensional view. Archadeck of Austin added flared steps which would welcome guests with open arms. We also added an arch, added some sidewall to the narrow steps to amplify the foot room and changed the cedar railings to metal to increase visibility. In order to achieve the desired effects we adjusted the steps, added a bit of deck and also added brick from the house. We used concrete aggregate to finish the sidewalk and add tread to the steps, as well as adding risers out of the same brick as the homes facade. We used the same brick to finish the wall, and the railings we added were beautiful Fortress metal railings.

Austin Pressure-Treated Decks: The good, bad and the ugly.
Pressure treated pine is a lumber product that is extensively used in framing decks and anything that is in close proximity to the ground. Years ago it was commonly called “wolmanized”, which was a brand name and today it is branded as “YellaWood“.

With pressure treated pine, basically the wood is placed in a pressurized environment and a solution of micronized copper azole (MCA) is forced into the wood, leaving a very slight greenish color. When pressure treated pine is new, it is so full of fluid that it even feels wet to the touch. Over time the liquid all evaporates but the chemical still protects the wood. When I refer to the good, the bad and the ugly of pressure treated wood, I am referring to the advantages as well as the drawbacks to using pressure treated pine.

The good aspect is that it is the least expensive deck material available. It has a strong weather resistance. It is guaranteed not to rot or decay and is offers a high resistance to wood eating insects.
The bad aspect it that it requires higher maintenance. Choosing pressure treated will require sealing or staining at the very minimum every year. It is also less attractive than cedar or other softwoods. It is also more prone to knots than other softwoods as well.
Now for the ugly part. The same virtues that make pressure treated resistant to rot, decay and wood eating insects, creates other problems like shrinkage, splitting, cupping, and makes the wood more prone to checking. The warranty will only cover rot, decay, insects and structural integrity on pressure treated pine. The warranty does NOT include shrinkage or other issues.
The great thing about pressure treated material is that if you’re trying to hold to a tight budget, you can get more deck for your money by using pressure treated, but you have to be prepared to spend the time and money it will take to maintain the pressure treated. You will also have to cope with the heavy saturation of fluid that is present in the material itself. On the first application it is good to wait a month before staining to give the water time to evaporate from the wood.

To better understand the terminology that is used when referring to pressure treated wood I have compiled a list of the commonly used terms and their meanings. Seasoned builders use these terms as second nature. Any homeowner considering a deck or other outdoor structure built using pressure treated wood should become familiar with these terms and their meanings.
- Shrinkage is the decrease in the dimensions of the wood itself by the loss of moisture content.
- Checking means a lengthwise separation in the wood which is caused by stresses the wood is put under while it is seasoned.
- Splitting is when the wood splits, this can happen in large or small sections of the wood.
- Cupping means the board is distorted away from the straight line that runs the width of the board.
- Twisting occurs when one corner of a piece of wood twists out of the plane of the boards around it.
- MCA is the chemical used as the preservative in pressure treated woods. MCA stands for micronized copper azole.
- Rot and decay entails the breakdown of the woods structural properties usually by outside forces such as water, moisture and in some scenarios condensation, humidity and lack of proper air flow.
- Wood Insects are insects that eat wood . There are a side variety of insects that feed off wood the most well-known being the termite.
- Wood Knots are located at the hard mass of wood where the branch joins the trunk of the tree. They are quite desirable for aesthetic appeal and are coveted in custom furniture making, but knots can lead to warping and cracking in some cases.
As is the case with any material that you decide upon to build your outdoor structure, knowing the pros and cons before you break ground is of the essence. Pressure treated woods are great for the budget minded but the value you receive is consistent with your desires and budget.

A worry free deck with a view at River Place in Austin
This deck and spa deck combination takes advantage of spectacular views and plenty of room for entertaining
I have been in the business of outdoor structures for many years and there’s a reason why I keep doing it. I love building outdoor structures and seeing the positive effect they have on my customers lives. I LOVE designing decks. I have also learned a lot over the years by not only working with my customers but by keeping in contact with them as well.
There are two things I really push for when my clients are making their decision. The first one is size. By this I don’t mean convincing someone who wants a 500 square foot deck to go to a 1,000 square feet. What I mean is measuring their furniture and seeing how much depth they really need so that the furniture can still be comfortable in the “pulled out” position, much like it will be after dinner and when your guests linger over coffee. People will pull out their chairs from the table and extend and cross their legs to enjoy the leg room that’s often needed after a wonderful and very filling dinner. You would be absolutely amazed at the difference that can be achieved by adding one or two feet of depth to a deck of patio.

The second thing I am passionate about is the view. Here in Austin we have beautiful hilly terrains, mature trees in many places and other beautiful structures and details within our yards. You may just want a good view of the backyard to watch the kids play. So often, people think that the only railing choice is one with thick and closely spaced pickets. This simply is not the case. Metal railings are very popular these days because they have very narrow pickets that not only dramatically improve the view, but they also require less maintenance.

One such job where Archadeck of Austin was able to frame the view and offer plenty of linger and leg room was a deck we recently completed for homeowners in River Place, which is inside Austin. These homeowner’s residence overlooks a beautiful view of a canyon, unfortunately, a good portion of this stunning view was obscured. This was in part by the old deck having too many benches and the railing. Literally, when you were inside the home looking out, all you could see were benches. We aimed to change that for the better in our design and re-decking plan. We aimed to open up that view so the homeowners could relish the view. Since their home is so elevated on one side they also yearned for a little privacy on the deck as well. We were able to incorporate both with this new re-decking. Since the existing frame of the old deck was in such good condition we were able to immediately move forward with the re-decking.

An older contractor had built a seat that incorporated the beautiful tree that was in the middle of the large part of the deck. We wanted to keep this in the design of the re-decking, because it gave the deck a personality and uniqueness all its own.
The deck is a massive 1,000 square feet and 5′ off the ground and in some places 11′ off the ground as well. The homeowners decided to replace the old deck with composite decking . They chose the very desirable Fiberon Horizon decking in Ipe. Today’s composites have evolved to being spectacular and are virtually maintenance free. They have no open pores so there is nowhere for mold to grow, and plastic capped composites such as this can be cleaned with simple soap and water they pay for themselves in no time because of the lack of maintenance required on a deck like this. These materials have a 25 year manufacturers warranty as well. The difference in composites today as opposed to ten years ago is the difference between night and day. People still love the tranquility and natural look of a wood deck and this can now be captured with today’s composites.

We finished out the new deck with a Radiant rail post with stunning Fortress iron railing. We still wanted to achieve a decorative effect so we used composite post sleeves, this allows the homeowners to “picture frame” the deck but doesn’t obscure any of the breathtaking view. We removed the backs from the existing benches and used the iron rails to open up the deck so the homeowners can see the canyon as well as their lovely pool.
These Homeowners in River Place, TX now have the deck and view of their dreams, built out of hassle free, worry free composites. They have plenty of room for entertaining and quaint evenings overlooking the canyon for many years to come.

Tigerwood becomes the talk of the town in this Bee Cave, TX community
It is clearly evident that style and elegance can be contagious. Within the Falcon Head West community of Bee Cave, TX nearly all the residents that live in the same cul-de-sac came down with the same symptoms, a yearning for the simple, elegant and classic sensibility which entails the desire to have a deck made of Tigerwood.

These homeowners in Bee Cave, TX contacted Archadeck of Austin when they initially built their home and once they closed on the house we began work right away on the deck when they moved in. It is always nice to have your entire home ready and waiting when it is time to move into your new house, including any outdoor structures. The Falcon Head West community is an upscale neighborhood in Bee Cave, TX and has a very hilly terrain. These homeowners decided upon a tigerwood deck because of its classic beauty and sensibility. We built a two-story deck and decked over an existing patio with sleeper framing. The final dimensions in length on this new deck came to a substantial 48′ long.

We installed the decking in a stunning diagonal pattern and alternated 4″ and 6″ boards for even more of a custom look to accommodate the varying widths. The railing is a tigerwood Deckorator panel rail which we constructed on site with black aluminum pickets. We finished up the structure with lattice skirting because this is a requirement within the neighborhoods HOA (Home Owners Association) guidelines. The homeowner opted to stain the new deck himself.
Upon completion of the new deck, four of this homeowners neighbors decided to add a tigerwood deck to their home as well. What is it they say about first impressions? Recently homeowners in Austin TX contacted us to build a unique and stunning pergola which encompasses all the spirit of Texas’ unique scenery by overlooking the river in Town Lake. The homeowners knew they wanted a two-sided pergola because when the house was originally purchased they had scaled models assembled depicting the projects they wished to do.

The home has a fantastic view overlooking the river and gets plenty of wind and lots of sunshine. The existing deck is 22 feet off the ground and on a third story, this combined with the steep driveway of the home presented some difficult logistics in constructing the angled pergola which was designed to become part of the 3rd story decks integration. The addition of the pergola will help these homeowners utilize the deck properly and add shade to the upstairs deck as well as the windows of the home.
The challenge for Archadeck of Austin was to get the materials for the pergola up to the 3rd story. We had to haul materials up to the third story using the homes internal winding staircase.

The pergola itself is constructed of beautiful western red cedar which compliments the traditional Mexican clay tile roof. we extended the joists a little further so the pergola would have a cantilever effect. The lathing on the pergola spans about 1.5″ apart as to provide shade within the pergola. The design of this pergola is unique and innovative.

Here at Archadeck of Austin we receive calls from homeowners wondering if they can re-deck their existing deck. There are many reasons why homeowners want to re-deck. We recently completed a re-decking for a wonderful retired couple in Leander, TX. who had an existing wood deck that was a little worse for wear. The deck was grayed out, faded, decayed, rotting and was behind on maintenance. They decided to take a look into re-decking with composite so they would not have to worry about maintenance.
We met with the couple and did an inspection of the deck. The frame of the deck was completely structurally sound and suitable for re-decking. We re-decked the structure with TimberTech Twin Finish in the redwood color and used a combed surface composite that carried a bit of red tine through it, to simulate the look of real wood. We also built planters and benches to open up the view of the yard so the couple would not feel as if they were boxed in.

Here in Austin, the Steiner Ranch community is known as “The land between the lakes”. Situated beautifully between Lake Travis and Lake Austin this neighborhood boasts upscale living with an enormous amount of amenities. This community has many pools for its residents to cool off from the Texas sun. Archadeck of Austin recently re-decked a 4,320 sq. ft. pool deck for the Steiner Ranch community that met with rave reviews from its users. Steiner Ranch residents love their new pool deck
We rebuilt the majority of the structure using TimberTech Reliaboard in Cedar. This particular color of Reliaboard is clean and at the same time has a rustic essence. Since one of the areas of the pool surround was not level, we added the level decking surface. Some of the existing material was reusable but we had to add some masonry work to the pool surround and build a limestone partition to avoid tripping hazards.

Among the obstacles to overcome with this re-decking was a tree that came up through the deck. Steiner Ranch is known for its beautiful old trees. So encountering a tree poolside was no surprise. This unique feature required us to create a hexagon type ring made from decking boards which surrounds the tree at the deck level but is not attached to the deck surface. This allows room for the tree to grow, but not enough room to leave a gap that a child could possibly lose a toy in under the deck. Since the structure had previously been constructed of plastic it had become brittle and wavy from exposure to the sun. The new composite decking material we used is easy on the feet on those hot summer days and is also extremely durable and low maintenance. This composite has the realistic appearance of beautiful cedar as well. The supports of the existing pergola had been damaged by carpenter ants and required re-enforcement while we were completing the re-decking on the pool area as well.
The residents of Steiner Ranch love the new re-decking. It has all the beauty of real wood without the headaches. Now residents can kick back for an afternoon by the pool surrounded by the same quality and beauty that is visible throughout this entire community.

What do you do when things go really wrong with your contractor?
We had a gentleman call us last week. He finds himself in a tremendous bind because the contractor building his project is not performing and totally not responsive. All attempts to get through to the contractor have failed and he finds himself stuck, with a partially completed project and no end in sight.
In addition to timeliness problems and communication problems, the owner purchased a large amount of material only to find out that the contractor had used some of the expensive material for concrete forms and temporary framing.
The owner called us for guidance. We knew exactly that bind he was in. Changing contractors in the middle of a project has serious consequences and should only be done when all else has failed. There are design and cost implications to consider. I wanted to help him, but wanted to make sure he had thought of all of the financial implications of the decision. First, he had to find out what the consequences were to get out of his current contract. Secondly, he had to accept that most likely some work would need to be re-done. A contractor that was that much of a headache likely had also made some building mistakes. Finally, whatever design existed when the project started, had to be picked up and followed in order to successfully complete the project.
Our first step would be to create a construction plan and drawings to match his design. This is not to say that we would redesign it per sea but, because we have a 5-year structural warranty and third-party backed guarantee we have to ensure that all the considerations that support that warranty are taken into account.
This gentleman was really wishing that he had checked out this contractor more carefully up front. So many times when you interview contractors, they all seem somewhat similar and much of the decision is weighted on on gut feel. Gut feel is very important. But, performance, track record, and real experiences are extremely important when selecting a contractor to do a large job at your home.
I’m not saying everything at Archadeck is perfect, without question, we stand by our work, we have left no job unfinished, have a great reputation, and create beautiful outdoor spaces.

Ask the contractor for multiple references. Any contractor that’s worth their salt will have plenty of references to give you. And, just because they gave you references, don’t take that on face value. Prepare questions and give them a call.
In addition to client references, you also want to check them out with the BBB and Angie’s List and other local lists such as those.
Make sure the contractor has a strong warranty.
Find out how long the contractor has been in business in your market and how many projects they’ve built. That’s one of the ultimate tests. You know as well as I do that a bad contractor will run themselves out of business very quickly.

You don’t have to achieve your dream all in one effort
Pacing yourself is very important. It’s everything when running a race, when doing a big project for work and can also be important when you’re remodeling your backyard space.

What is your dream for your backyard? Close your eyes for a couple minutes and concentrate on all the things you want that space to do for your family and what it might look like. Think about the landscaping, the furniture and whether the furniture sits on a deck or hardscape patio. Does your dream backyard include a spa or a pool? Do you need more shade like a pergola or covered porch? Do you need space to cook and entertain guests?
As a practical person, I too have a tough time with this question. As soon as I start envisioning the dream, the other side of my brain starts nagging at me to tone it down and be realistic. This mental tug-a-war can actually stop you from making progress toward the dream for years. It doesn’t hurt to envision the perfect backyard oasis. Mine would definitely include an outdoor fire pit with lots of room around it for many Adirondack chairs to sit in the evening with friends or family and enjoy hot chocolate in the colder months and an iced cocktail in the warmer months. That’s the thing about fire pits. They have a romanticism and mystique about them.
After capturing the dream, and if the dream is more than you can afford, then consider pacing the development of your dream backyard. A lot of my customers don’t realize that we actually can build outdoor living spaces in phases. For example, we can build a deck and go back a year later to add a patio. Maybe the ultimate plan has a outdoor kitchen on a wider section of the patio. You now have the opportunity to lay out the electrical and gas line for the kitchen under the patio, build the patio now, but hold off on the cost of the kitchen until next year. We do this with a number of our customers. After several years they look up and realize that their dream has been realized. Phased development makes a lot of sense for a lot of people.
The picture of the project you see above represents an addition to a multi-level deck. We build the top level and the mid level already. Now the customer is ready to add a spa deck so we are going back to add the 3rd tier of the deck which will include the spa. It’s been a couple years and the family loves their deck and spends so much time out there that they want to add more “rooms” if you will to their deck.

You can see based on the furniture that the family really lives on their deck. The advancements in outdoor furniture and fabrics even allow comfy couches and plush pillows that can survive year-round outdoors.

Tigerwood is a very dense hardwood. As a matter of fact, if you drop tigerwood into a pool, it will sink. It’s very dense and very strong.

I want to show you one of the Tigerwood hardwood decks we recently built in Barton Creek. Here’s Mark Mommsen showing you the deck and talking a little about the project.
The deck includes multiple “living areas”. In the video, Mark is talking about standing in the lower octagon. That area was made as a quiet sitting area overlooking the canopy of the trees. This deck is actually built on a very steep slope that quickly drops off to a creek running down below. The second living area of this deck is the outdoor fireplace area. The third living area on this deck is the pergola section which includes a bar, electricity, ceiling fans and a great deal of seating area. Over in the middle area between the outdoor fireplace and the pergola section can be used for another sitting area or just to give some breathing room between the multiple living areas on the deck.

What you’re looking at above is the seating and covered pergola section of the deck. You can see the extremely steep drop-off to the left side. From the entire deck area, you can hear the stream trickling below.

Above, you see the deck furnished and it’s easier to see the extended bar area around the perimeter of this section of the deck. You can see how large of an area this is since they are able to fit both bar stools and a table.

The photo above shows the reading area portion of the deck. The area is separated by stairs to put the seating/reading area on a different elevation. This helps create privacy and a feeling of being in a separate living space.
