An Austin Two-Level Concrete Patio Becomes a Dance Floor Complete with Outdoor Grill and Fire Pit

Austin_-_only_just_begun

Archadeck of Austin begins the construction on this one of a kind patio.

Do you remember the dance scene in the Sound of Music where Georg and Maria dance on the outdoor patio to the folk tune? There are so many enchanting elements of that scene and one of them is certainly the fact that they are outside on a private patio.

These Austin owners commissioned a large double concrete patio for just that purpose – dancing. They love to entertain and both they and their friends love to dance. What better than an outdoor entertaining area made for both dancing and socializing?

This image shows the concrete beginning to be poured over a long line.

From a logistical perspective, there were some challenges. The homeowners have a utility easement that restricts them from building a normal structure and are limited to a low profile patio. With this in mind we were able to create a huge patio and then a second patio three feet higher which is closer to the home itself. This gives the patio a tiered effect, which enables the homeowners to create a grand entrance when leaving the back of the house by descending onto the semi-circle patio and then down to the lower patio to reach the dance floor and fire pit area.

This is the home before construction began on the multi-level, tiered patio.

The structure will also include a nine foot outdoor kitchen on one end, a custom fire pit and  custom built-in bench seating to take a breather after dancing the night away. The fire pit can also inspire romantic evenings with a slow dance or two by the light of the fire.  Archadeck of Austin was able to weave the customers personality and tastes into this design to give them an outdoor structure, that against all the odds and structural confines, will give them exactly what they wanted-a place to dance, and much, much more. The structure should be completed in about a month, and we can’t wait to share photos of the finished structure with you. These homeowners look forward to taking center stage for their first dance on this one-of-a-kind patio.

A front entrance transformation in Austin, TX that takes these homeowners to a cherished memory in their lives.

Proposed gothic front entrance with nset of the entrance of St .Edwards to show similarities.

Once in a while Archadeck of Austin gets a front row seat on witnessing magic happen before our very eyes. This magic comes from an outdoor structure design that creates an emotional reaction with the customers.

3-D design rendering for proposed front entrance by Archadeck of Austin

As is the case with these homeowners in the Circle C  Ranch community right here in Austin, TX. We created a design rendering of the front entrance to their home that stirred in them memories and emotions that make this structure unforgettable. The homeowners both had attended college at St. Edwards University of Austin. The design rendering we created for their home immediately took them back to the front entrance of St. Edwards, where as it turns out, was the very place the husband had proposed to his wife, on those very front steps. The homeowners immediately said  “I do” and  decided to go forth with the design Archadeck of Austin had created that reminded them of that special place, at that special time.

Their  home, located  in the Circle C  Ranch community was a fairly large home. The original builder had done an average job on the entrance and the path leading up to entry was rather narrow, as were the stairs, and the front porch was railed with cedar. Archadeck of Austin was called in to open up the entrance with a new design that would add character and style to the home.

This photo shows the flared steps and wider, more welcoming entrance we provided.

We went over the plan using a 3-dimensional view. Archadeck of Austin added flared steps which would welcome guests with open arms. We also added an arch, added some sidewall to the narrow steps to amplify the foot room and changed the cedar railings to metal to increase visibility. In order to achieve the desired effects we adjusted the steps, added a bit of deck and also added brick from the house. We used concrete aggregate to finish the sidewalk and add tread to the steps, as well as adding risers out of the same brick as the homes facade. We used the same brick to finish the wall, and the railings we added were beautiful  Fortress metal railings.

This finished structure is truly a beauty to behold, and one these Austin, TX  homeowners can never forget. Archadeck of Austin was able to convey that romance and emotion they felt from many years ago into a structure they can enjoy everyday. An entrance transformation such as this is proof positive that Archadeck of Austin  is more than just a backyard company.

Archadeck of Austin Takes us on a Tour of Flagstone

Austin_flagstone_outdoor_fireplace

Beautiful flagstone outdoor fireplace by Archadeck of austin

Here in the Austin area flagstone is quite popular. We have been using it in a variance of structures, from patios to pathways, flagstone has a rustic elegance about it that can’t be found in any other medium. Here at Archadeck of Austin each of  our clients get their own design rendering. These design renderings are never used again, so the structure you get from us, is yours and yours alone. Since flagstone is 100% natural since it is cut from the earth, every piece of flagstone is different as well. No two flagstone projects will be the alike because no two pieces of flagstone are identical.

This outdoor bar has a unique design that looks great in flagstone

Deciding which flagstone to use can be a difficult decision because of all the different types, colors and patterns of flagstone there are to choose from. We want this daunting task of selecting the type and color to be a little easier for you and hopefully after you have reviewed this blog, you will have a little better idea of the basics of flagstone selections. When talking about natural stone such as flagstone there are words that are used to describe certain attributes of the stone itself such as undulation which are natural wavelike bends, curves and elevation differences you can see and feel throughout the stone. Veining refers to a pattern or natural markings that are visible in the stone. Swirling means any curving, twisting line or shape visible naturally within the stone.

The Oklahoma family of Flagstone

Oklahoma buff peach is a very popular color. Customers choose this color frequently with its subtle pleasing tones. The variation in the tones of Oklahoma buff peach can vary from peach tones, taupe tones and even gray tones. The surface tends to be smoother and not have as much undulation as some of the other Oklahoma’s.

Other Oklahoma flagstones include the dazzling Chocolate gold, which has quite a bit of undulation and veining. The veining of this flagstone gives it a rich, robust feel. Variances in Oklahoma Chocolate gold can be deep browns, to gray and of course the gold hues as well.

Oklahoma taupe is another favorite of ours. It has a fair amount of undulation but a more neutral feel. It conveys variation of taupe, light gray and earthy browns. This color works well with a lot of different mediums.

Then you have Oklahoma Silver mist. The name itself gives it away. It has a silvery-misty sort of look to it. Color varies from darker grays to light silver, and slight blue undertones.

The Arizona family of flagstone

The Arizona flagstones tend to be more of a sandstone type of stone.  They have a Smoother surfacing with less undulation. Not as bumpy as your Oklahoma’s. They have a sandier , flatter look to them.

arizona_buckskin_flagstone

Arizona buckskin flagstone

Arizona buckskin is a good neutral flagstone. Neutral does not mean boring in the case of this flagstone though. When I look at this color I am reminded of a buckskin horse. This color can only be achieved through mother nature. It is rustic, yet elegant, tough yet soft. The natural pigment of the earth is apparent in the hue. It works well with many mediums.

arizona_rose_flagstone

Arizona rose flagstone

Then there is the beautiful Arizona Rose flagstone. Here in Texas and beyond this is a much coveted color. Arizona Rose is best described as a light brick-red, with natural pink variations and gray undertones. It reminds me of ethnic pottery or the color of the sky right before it disappears into the horizon on a hot Texas night. Even with the entwining of rose and pink variations, this is a great neutral color that will work well with gray all the way to dark brown. Any color where you have gray or brown undertones will only enhance the beauty of Arizona Rose flagstone.

The Mexican family of flagstone

Austin_flagstone-rose_rosa

Flagstone patio done in Mexican rosewood

Last but certainly not least we have the Mexican flagstones. This flagstone has a lot of variation in color and movement throughout the stone such as veining and swirling. It is a work of art in itself. As with any flagstone each piece is different, but the beautiful degree of variation in Mexican flagstone makes it a joy to look at.

Mexican Rosewood is probably the finest example of the Mexican flagstones. This color has the hints of terra-cotta you would expect from Mexican pottery, but with variations and swirls of peaches, reds and pinks. Truly original and truly lovely.

The Importance and Impact of the Design Rendering is Immeasurable

The realism of the design rendering at work

I cannot even imagine presenting a job to a prospective client without the immeasurable aid of our custom design renderings. Through a custom designed rendering we can add in your furniture pieces, additional seating areas and even your grill. A properly composed rendering will show details and nuances not seen in a conventional one-dimensional drawing. Details such as elevation changes, and the direction of the swing on the doors.

Patio and fireplace rendering

Presenting a three-dimensional design rendering to our client gives them an opportunity to see their design true to life. This true to life rendering also gives them the opportunity to make changes to areas and details they normally wouldn’t be aware of until after the structure was completed, this way we get a better idea of exactly what the customer themself envisions.Another postive detail is that all our renderings come with landscaping ideas to help the homeowner envision the truly finished project.

An example of all the details shown in a design rendering

Archadeck of Austin prides itself on constructiing spaces large enough to fit your furniture and outdoor living lifestyle. Remember when you were ready to move into your “big” new house, and once all the furniture was in place the structure wasn’t so “big” anymore? We want the structure you get from us to be all that you imagined and everything it seems, meaning that we will make every effort to make certain your space has enough

Another design rendering by Archadeck of Austin

“flow” and “harmony” once the furnishings are moved into the space. Showing the space through the design rendering will give you the opportunity to maybe make that covered porch a little larger to accommodate that large outdoor seating ensemble you have, or the to add more room for that prized gas grill and smoker.

In essence the difference between a written description of what you are getting and a rendering is that more happens when a professional rendering is drawn to include emphasis and demonstration in true to life examples of how the details will be taken care of. If you are considering adding an outdoor or indoor space to your life, give Archadeck of Austina call to get a  realistic design rendering  of your structure today.Call (512) 259-8282.

Outdoor Kitchen Additon by Archadeck of Austin Takes a Pergola to the Flip-Side, With Stunning Results

Archadeck of Austin covered patio and outdoor kitchen

As you may already know the Texas state motto is “friendship”. Archadeck of Austin has created an outdoor living area that is all about friendship and entertaining. This unique structure boasts an outdoor kitchen and covered porch that is sure to draw this homeowner’s friends and family to their home like a magnet.

Outdoor bar detail, in kitchen area

These detailings were added to an old home that had an existing patio that was very long and had very high ceilings, about 16’ to the ceiling. We decided to enclose two ends of the patio because of the high winds that are common in this area. We then built an outdoor kitchen at one end and elevated the rear bar section of the outdoor kitchen.

The outdoor kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, a built-in sink, gas grill, side burner, storage and pull-out drawers. We used standard exterior porcelain tile with a bullnose edge and added a unique backsplash to the kitchen area. We used a combination of stone and stucco in the structure to break up the amount of stonework on the house itself.

Side view showing the "flip side" and innovative use of the pergola

The most unique feature of this structure is the innovative use of the pergola which you see hanging from the ceiling. We used the pergola in a hanging manner to help lower the ceiling in this massively high structure to “cozy” it up and make it more conducive to feeling like a gathering spot and to also use it to hang lighting features from and add light to the space. We had to install the pergola so it would not swing in the wind. We attached it using large iron chains secured from the pergola to the ceiling joists, we also added cross members between the chains to solidify the structure to ensure no swinging. The chains not only do the tough job of expertly securing the pergola, they also add a rustic charm to the feature.

Open air patio with bar

We then hung the pergola directly over the outdoor kitchen area. All the decorative elements were added to the pergola before we elevated it. The detailed light fixtures are actually made from the antlers of white-tailed deer, adding additional character to this already unique space, and  a great element to use as a conversation piece!

This structure is big on Texas style. The homeowner’s selection of wood, and stone add nature inspired beauty to this structure , as well as all the detailing that adds rustic charm. This space will be truly memorable to all who have the opportunity to enjoy it. If you are considering the addition of a “uniquely you” outdoor living space , give Archadeck of Austin a call, we can plan and construct a structure  for you that will  be memorable for years to come.Call (512) 259-8282
